How to listen to track being recorded

I recorded a backing track on track 1 from a CD. I then plugged my guitar into the mic input of the PC and I can see the level on the record monitor indicator, but I can't hear it. Is this a sound card issue (I have AC97) or are there settings required in Cool Edit Pro to allow this?

The only time I ever was able to monitor my recording track was when I used the line in on the pc . In the windows mixer which can be accessed from the options menu in the multitrack veiw of CEP . Usually the playback mixer opens , to get to the record controls select > options > properties > and click on the " Adjust volume for " > recording . Then check the little boxes for all the devises you need to have shown , ie " what you hear ' ,
analog/line in , microphone , and wav/mp3.

In " line in " click on the advanced box and make sure " record without monitoring " IS NOT checked .

Also in the advanced section of the mic control checking the 20 db boost may help if you are using the mic line in .

Also be sure you have a full duplex soundcard or it will only work in one direction at a time .


Are you able to hear your guitar thru you pc speakers if you play without recording in CEP ???

I do! (my card is SB Live or something but nothing special or expensive)
And everything you said is answer for hundreds of guys who keep asking about this particular problem.
I think I had same sound card (A97) on my old PC but I'm not quite sure.
It is important to choose line in on recording windows mixer if you use line in and adjust level of signal.

On playing windows mixer line in must not be “mute” and volume level have to be adjusted so you can hear both guitar that you’re recording and tracks already recorded into multi section.
 
Yes I did, the sound level from my PC is not as loud as I like for ear monitoring whilst recording (ie deafening!) but using the line input worked. I need to buy a decent mini stereo jack to 2 1/4" jack lead as I don't have the patience to solder up mini jacks, so I can beef up the level in my main mixer.
