How to learn about recording levels?

I think my sound card is giving me pretty bad results (onboard DFI mobo). But I have a Behringer 1002 and a v67g. I kind of just mess with the volume, gain, and level knobs til it sounds decent without any feedback and any clipping in N-track. I know I am doing it right, where can I learn about levels, volumes, etc?
A nice online tutorial would be great.

If you are "just messing with it" chances are you aren't doing it right. In the digital world if you don't gain stage things intelligently you are asking for a bad recording.
