I just got an extra 2 gigs, so I'm at 4 gigs now.

Dude! can you tell a difference I thought it was pointless after a gig and a half considering Ive never had it go above 700 MB in the task manager

HP Notebook, AMD Thurion 64 512 MB PC 3200

Desktop PC, AMD Athlon XP 1500+ 512 PC 2100

most applications can not utilize over 2g of ram..however more ram contributes to overall system stability, which is why I have 4G. as cheap as it is now, why not?

I recently upgraded to an old dual Xeon 2.4 Ghz @ 400 Mhz FSB. 4 Gigs of PC2100 didn't cost much. I have two 10K RPM 36 GB U160 HDDs that I run on dedicated busses (2 channel onboard U160 SCSI).

I'm saving my duckets for a bigger data drive...

Though I've never seen that much RAM used either, I have had NO PROBLEMS running DAW software, keeping SETI in RAM, and switching between and game apps like DOOM 3 or Tomb Raider Legends and surfing the net or what-have-you.

Kinda nice...

I got a Pentium 4 2.66 with 2GB and a AMD X2 3800+ with 2gb, and I just bought a couple of pieces of hardware for a new computer. This bad boy will have the Pentium D 995 extreme dual core with 2mb cache, at 3.46ghz sporting 1066mhz fsb(really don't like the brand but it supports 16gb max ddr), ECS board =/, with 8gb of crucial PC2-5300 DDR2 (2gbx4) and 600gb of space on SATAII. I have the motherboard, the memory, the hard drives & case, cooling, and other drives already.. The Pentium chip will cost me almost a thousand.

But will it be enough??

;p

I paid about $600 for my entire computer...

never  I'm hoping it'll be fast enough for some digital work on 3dmax or something.

I have an Intel D320 (or Prescot) 2.4 with 1.5 of ram, I just upgraded a month ago from 512, noticed a big difference.

2 gigs, only cause my iMac doesnt support more.

i tend to max my computers out on ram, i have my ibook maxed out at 1.5, my old PC maxed at 512.

im fanatical about that stuff.

absolute difference.

from 1 gb to 2 gb is like night and day when it comes to recording..

What do you think about this setup I want to build:

1. MOBO = Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

2. PROCESSOR = AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model ADA4000BNBOX

3. 3GB OF RAM = Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) System Memory Model KVR800D2N5/1G

4. POWERSUPPLY = Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply

5. MAIN APPZ HD = Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

6. 2 AUDIO HD'S = Western Digital Caviar SE WD2000JS 200GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

7. DVD BURNER = Pioneer 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Read Black ATAPI Model DVR-111D

If I figured correctly, This MOBO, RAM and Processer should work together.

PS, Whats the max (MHZ) I can overclock this to?

I'm planning on building this soon after a insurance settlement comes in.

Given that the Intel Core 2 offerings are doing so much better with multimedia performance, I would plan for the future and look at the Core 2's. They are relatively inexpensive (for the performance they offer) and seem to be working on proved platforms with no issues.
I am an AMD guy myself, but if I had to build a rig now, I would look at core 2.

Just my 2 cents.

I can jump in on this thread cos I just upgraded my RAM yesterday. It made a crapload of difference.
