How Many Tracks?

I just ran through a test of how many tracks I could play back while recording the maximum number (2) of input tracks on my soundcard. The tracks were all from distinct .wav files. The tracks were added two at a time and the playback of that number of tracks was attempted without any recording, then with two more tracks being recorded. Up until the playback stuttered. I'd be curious to see how my numbers compare with other systems. A great candidate for a homerecording database. CPU/HD/RAM/Software/soundcard/# of tracks tallied across the members.
BTW, the Echo Reporter reported far less than I actually got.

sounds like a good idea, but you might want to add: bit depth, sampling rate, and active plug ins...

Heh, that doesn't suprise me at ALL! My last AMD system was SOO much worse for recording than my current Celeron system. In fact, it was worse with just about everything "fun". Even 3D Later! applications ran pathetic.

Due to AMD's past performance record (after breaking with Intel), I will never consider their processors again unless they do some substantial overhauling. An FPU would be nice :)

I'm even weary of the Athalon chips. Yes a 600Mhz Athalon processor will probably be faster than the 300Mhz PII you upgraded from, but let's compare it to a 600Mhz PIII. Anyone have one yet? And a real comparison would be nice...none of these "the K6-2 is 80% than the PII according to proprietary AMD benchmarking software!" Man I feel so dumb for believing the "stats" and buying a K6-2.

It is my guess that AMD is now trying to compensate for poor technology with promised faster bus speeds (200Mhz!) and more cache.

Not that I have anything against AMD :) I suppose this is going to start a big ol' flame war.
