Ok, i'm pretty comfortable with my moniters. They are krk rp-5's, not the best but it's not an issue. Anyway, i find that they work will but keep seeing that people use either multiple sets of moniters, or hi fi speakers to see how their mix translates. How many of you do this? Do you find it helps and would you feel like you were hurting yourself by not doing this?

I don't have the luxury of studio monitors.. I mix on mainly headphones and a PA. So, when I feel I have a pretty good mix, I rip it to CD and listen to it on a home theater system, in my car, and on my laptop. Then take notes and fix anything that I can..

I've read that some people on here also like to listen to thier mix, before finalizing it, in the car, with headphones, etc.

Yeah, i always listen on my car but it's not like i can easily compensate and check it on my moniters. While mixing, i'm just thinking it would be good to be able to switch to something less accurate, check it, and go back easily without getting out of the environment.

I have computer speakers and my main monitors hooked up through behringer's mini-mon monitor switcher, volume control, headphone amp, talk back mic, headphone cue out (with talk back mic foot control that sends my voice to the headphone amp downstairs), thingy. Charles Dye does the same thing computer speakers with his main monitors being NS-10s, with something that I am sure is 10-20 times more expensive then my little berry.

I have the KRK RP-5s as well... they put out just enough bottom end to simulate what you'll hear on standard playback mediums... I also reference a mix using Sony studio headphones that seem to emphasize bass, as well as trying out a mix on earbuds, on my computer speakers, and in my car... granted some of these are further down the road than others (headphones are quicker to test on than going out to my car :)) But yea, always helps to try something out on as many systems as possible.

I primarily mix on a pair of YSM-1's and check mixes on a pair of JBL LX-5's, a small pair of Technics (my version of an Aurotone) and a pair of Rockford Fosgate coaxial car speakers. It works for me.

I switch between Mackie HR824's and KRK V4's. It is helpful to reference a different sized speaker, in my experience.

I first mix on my Tannoys, then when I have what I think is a decent mix I'll go to a pair of Sony Headphones which tend to accentuate a lot of detail that my open listening environment doesn't pick up. From there I'll go to the car, then burn to mp3 and listen through a consumer soundcard.

Typically I will grab a professionally done cd in the style of the song and play it to get my ears accustomed to the overall feel and tone I want my own mix to project.

HR songwriter setup one room, no glass and separation here.

I use the monitors for everything I can. The phones are used for some critical and late night listening and comparison if somethigns gropssly SSSHHHHing or Blloooommmpppping.

the Car is the most enjoyable for listening. Probably the fairest, average, common to other systems.

For some reason my home hi-fi is the most ugliest playback...on my HR stuff only?
I have some nice Paradigm and Tower's and big label stuff sounds fine...
(and some HR stuff I've bought sounds great).
but this system is the real depressing playback of all, its just cruel sometimes..damn!

I have NHTPro A-10s with a matching sub for monitors. I also use a set of Avantone Mix Cubes to check the mix. They are the modern Auratone equivalent. The car is good too, as is the home stereo system. Listening in a variety of environments on different gear helps.

I use a set of ysm1p's for monitors.

The other speakers are a set of EV ZX-1's with a alto mac 2.2 amp. Seems to work great.

i listen on monitors, then audio technica m40fs headphones, then my PA system(JBL 15") , then laptop speakers, then ipod earbuds.

... and i usually hate the mix from the beginning anyway!

i've been considering adding a shitty little ghetto blaster to my monitoring chain...perhaps even something that plays mono to check translation on crappy playback systems, but right now i usually just go check stuff in my car and a couple other stereos

I have my NS10's and also a set of either JBL bookshelf speakers or Bose 301's. I like the Bose for cranking it up and walking out of the room. I wish I had 4-5 sets in my room. I feel like while 90% of my time is low volume on the NS10s, I like the change and think I hear different things.

I have Alesis M1's, Wharfedale 8.1's, a Bose system with a subwoofer, and a pair of AKG 240 cans. I use them all when I am mixing, as well as running out to the car.

I use a set of kenwood's better monitors for cross reference from the mains. I also keep a small sony cd combo player nearby to check cd's on. Sometimes the AKG phones, but not too often.
