Really depends what your going for and how much control you want to have in the mix - of course you know that Glenn John's 3 mic thing - maybe for live . If I we recording this I would use 14 mics minimum
(2) OH - evenly spaced
(1) Hat
(1) Snare Top
(1) Snare Bottom
(4) each Tom
(2) Each Kick inside
(2) Each Kick outside
(1) Room Mic @~ 3m from the whole kit at standing ear level

If you are doing metal - add (2) sub mics to the kick

If you think that is a lot - how many do you think Neil has??? check out the RCA - R77 in the rear

cool drum set :)

Amm:
2 mic for each bass
2 up
and 1 for each tam tam

That RCA is a secret weapon of a ribbon. The sub micronic element ribbon mic's capture even the slightest distant fringe as it breaks off into fuzzies. Depending on the transformer, its like twirling angels dancing on the head of a pin.

Transformers, more than meets the eye..

I would use as many mics as I had inputs for (16). Can always throw away what you don't use
