Im curious about the rendering time (mixing down/export) times that we are seeing in our respective DAWs. Ive seen tons of threads about cpu usage when you use x amount of plugins over x amount of tracks...but what I want conducted is a poll of export times for mixdown...

I like to keep things unbounced unless im absolutely sure about them and one of those things is I never bounce is my drums. Either way with about 50 percent cpu usage in the Cubase VST performance window...it takes me about 3 minutes, to 3 and a half minutes to export with say maybe 32 tracks... mostly stereo tracks so i dont know if thats more like 64 tracks since theres left and right..but anyways...thats my figure.

3 and a 1/2 minutes to mixdown a 4.5 minute song.

Please post what type of cpu usage you're seeing in your DAW..so we have a reference point and how long the song is, how many tracks... plug ins if you want to add that, etc etc etc.

BTW
My DAW is a Shuttle an35n Ultra, AMD XP 2700 333 running at 2.17 ghz, 1 GB of PC 2700 333, 1 160 WD GB hdrive 7200 rpm ATA100and 1 Seagate 80 GB hdrive 7200 ATA100...

And the Sequencer I use is Cubase VST/32 5.1

Peace!!

The same holds true for exporting: the greater number of plugs greatly affects the time it takes to export. Never timed it, but it is clearly evident while exporting.

Ok so far Ive got a kind request

Please post a response listing what DAW you use...the person that had less than 1/2 a minute uses a Pro Tools system...which is entirely understandable...however i would love to see what specs the other people who have posted have. Are you using a P4 System? Rendering Farm ala FX Teleport?
Give us more information...the poll is going fine but I kind of feel for this to mean anything we need to have at the very basic some information on what kind of system the user has when they experience these results.

To the last person that posted...so what kind of export times are you seeing in a typical song situation? For a 4 and a half minute song with about 50 percent cpu usage maybe 20 odd plug ins, bussing and plugs across the master buss i see about 3 and a half to 3 and 3 quarter minutes before mixdown is completed.

Maybe when i slap that Emu 0404 into my system ill see better results....Also...do any of the people who have posted use the UAD 1 or Powercore cards??

Peace

The limiting factor with mine seems to be the hard drive -it's chundering away like a mad chundering thing during export. Still, it's a 40Gig Deathstar for my Audio drive, doubtless some of you young guns have much faster drives.

As someone who once gigged with a homemade sequencer that loaded off cassette tape, I am not phased by this need for speed.

Bump!

I would love to have some more people put some replies up in this thread.

I guess another query for this poll would be are any of you using dsp cards?

I know the one person with 30 seconds mixdown time is using pro tools. Are any of you using the emu series cards with dsp yet? What kind of rendering times are you seeing?

Peace

I just rendered a mix in Vegas 5 this morning. The song was recorded 44.1/24 bit, and had 36 tracks (not all of them continuous). The song's running time is a little over 4 minutes. I had 5 different FX running in the main bus. On my Dell Dimension 8300, the render time was about 1 minute and 15 seconds.

Now you mentioned there were 5 effects on the main bus...did you have any effects on the individual tracks as well?

Man! He's making me wonder if that whole thing about the Pentiums rendering quicker than the AMDs comes into play when you mixdown a file.

Its almost like you should build a system that uses AMDs to process the audio fx...and then use a P4 to render the mixdown...aaah if only we had cross brand dual cpu systems! The closest we can get is FX Teleport...but in that environment im not sure how the P4 would use its rendering prowess in conjunction with the AMD processing the fx..I guess if the AMD feeds the output from the fx to the P4 during mixdown then the P4 would render the resulting combination of the info it gets over the lan from the AMD...since the AMD cant render it would only be muscle...hmmm...i wonder if anyone has done this before??

Thanks for being specific dude! Comeon I know more of you people have something interesting to say about this!

Get involved!!

Yeah, some eq on several, some compression on 2 or 3, noise gate on snare. I think that's about it.

EDITED: I just remembered I ended up taking the gate off the kick.
