How Does One Sync A Adat To A Cpu ?

In what context? What do you want to do? Record to the computer?

YO TRACK,

Here it goes.....

My set up consists of an old Otari 8(which sounds amazing) & I sync it with my CPU using smpte, The Audiophile 24/96, & cool edit pro.

The sync has worked pretty good.

I usually record keys and back vocals onto the digital realm.

Lead Vox, guitars, bass & drums go on the otari.

I'm investigating the next move up on the digital end.

This was some advice I got on another post.

What do YOU think ?

Thanks dude,

Advise is dangerous because if you take it and if it sucks...... But here's my take anyway. I personally think ADATs are very good to track on. There's NO learning curve, it's an expandable system and unlike pure computer based recording, IT'S WAY MORE DEPENDABLE. The only problem I ever had with mine was on three seperate occassions one of my machines gobbled a tape. Over a three year period, that ain't too bad. When you're working and everything is happening musicly, you just arm a track, patch an input and hit record. No fighting software to kick your musical buzz in the balls. The newer 20 bit Type II ADATs can be had used for $300 a piece. Now to use an ADAT like your Otari unfortunately you'd need a BRC to go with the ADAT to chase and lock to SMPTE but there again, what was once a $1500 item can be had cheap. The bright side of that set up is that unlike an analog tape deck where you lose a track to time code, the ADATs don't. You get all 8 tracks.
Getting audio in and out of a computer with an ADAT Edit card? My own personal experience with taht card is a bad one. I went through two different cards and it never worked right. Hell, Sonusman who hangs around here wanted to get a class action lawsuit against Alesis over simaler issues he had. I use a MOTU 2408 but if you only had one ADAT that might be over kill. There are a few cards out on the market that'll handle a ADAT to get your tracks in to a computer. Just my humble opinion. YMMV :D

THANKS TRACK RAT !!!!

A couple more questions if you do not mind ?

1) BRC ?

2) Editing software, any good ? Could I some how use Cool Edit Pro ?

3) Sound Quality, Do you feel that Adats are better sounding then my Audiophile 24/96 ?

Sean

Isn't it somehow possible to sync the HD24 with Cool Edit Pro 2? Using MTC or something...

A BRC is the "Big Remote Controll" for ADAT. It's the only way to get external sync (SMPTE) into an ADAT. I'm retiring one my self as I don't think it plays nice with my HD24.
On editing software, you can definately use Cool Edit Pro or any of the many multitracker/editors out there. We could all argue the various strong points of all the different ones out there but they're all decent and will do the job. I've used Cool Edit but I think Vegas is easier and more powerful. I think Cakewalk is even a little better and I'm thinking seriously about moving to Sonar. Just my humble opinion.
On sound quality, very subjective again. I think they sound great. There've been albums made on the old black faces and the type II's have even better converters. If you go to the www button right underneath here and go to my NoWhereRadio set up and check out Back At You. It was tracked in the basement to type II ADATs (two of 'em) and mixed thru an analog console. Granted the MP3 encoding is going to skew the sound quality a bit but you get the general idea.

DUDE,

Sounds very good !

I must (if you do not mind) ask for more of your opinions.

Do I need to sync with MTC or smpte ?

I mean what about s/pdif ?
