how does ACID work?

So, I sort of got snowballed at the music store...I don't have a sequencer or a sampler, nor do I have ACID, but I use my 788 like a sampler by cutting and pasting samples into songs. So anyway, I was actually looking for Big Fish audio loops, they didn't have the style I wanted, so the guy talked me into a "loops for Acid" cd because they play as wave files through, like, Musicmatch...I can then go from my pc into my 788 and manilpulate the loops from there. HOWEVER! the loops are only 1 to 3 seconds long and the tmpos are all over the place.

MY QUESTION IS: If I buy the software (ACID) does the program allow you to alter the tempo of the loops without modulating the key? Also, what version do I need to do some very basic arranging of loops, and what should that cost me? All I really want to do is be able to arrange different loops, make their tempo equal, and then dump segments from my pc into my 788. As it stands now, they are useless to me, even though they sound cool.

Please help. Anyone. Thank you!

ACID Music 3.0 will do what you need. It costs about $60.

But first, to get you started, you can go to:
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/download/freestuff.asp

and download the free ACID Xpress. That should give you an idea of what you can do. Hell, that free version may even be able to do what you need. Give it a try.
If not, ACID Music should be all you need. You don't sound like you need all the bells & whistles that come with the Pro version.

I tried to download that XPress and it froze up my pc and upset it so bad it wouldn't turn back on for an hour...I'll try again though...you guys are awesome for responding so quick...I JUST spent 45 minutes manipulating 8 seconds worth of loops by cutting and pasting on my 788...what a drag!!!

Thanks...I'll go get Xpress and follow with any questions I have.

Okay, so I download XPress to my desktop, when I try to open it nothing happens...any ideas?

What are the specs on your computer.

I tried Acid Xpress (came with my Delta 44) and couldn't get anything to work right on it...

the samples would play reeeeeally quiet... the tempo only went down as far as 75... (what aboot slow songs?!?!?) and the sample "Explorer" window would play the samples, as a default, as 4 beat loops at some crazy fast bpm's (like 600 or something)...

I tried making a simple boom-chick beat just to hear bass and snare and you couldn't even hear the snare.. even when I turned its vol up to 12... maybe I'm just an idiot... (which I wouldn't doubt..) but I couldn't get Acid Xpress to do even the simplest thing.

P.S. Spin... I got locked out of my original account.. can you do anything aboot that, or do I have to get the main dude to fix that???

How is this done ?

Yes...

It's done by slicing the sample based on its pulse. Markers get put in the file to indicate the sharp periodic transients (this is called an ACIDized file), and the software uses these to adjust the tempo.
