how do you get that heavy Metallica sound?

I have a great appreciation for jazz, where that kind of thing happens routinely, and wehen guys hit the wrong note, they often stick on it and repeat it. In context, it sounds great. In context, Kirk's justice and later solos just make me shake my head. Not because they are "wrong," but because of the context. If that makes me close-minded, so be it. I would have been bitterly disappointed if the whole album had been layered with Rick Wakeman synths too... because of context, not because I don;t appreciate Rick Wakeman or synths.

I think we're close to the same page, just wanted to clarify.

I don't perceive you as close minded at all. Many people who are compelled to learn theory often find out later that it's really all in the ears... that would be me and probably you too.

Some people try to describe what they don't like as theoretically incorrect (wrong key) so sometimes, learning a bit of theory can help them accept certain things and stretch their ears.
