how do these drums sound?

They sound very "live"... and they have a very strange stereo image....

I also find them a bit thin with a harsh high-end (you using EQ on the o/h's? if so - it's too much.......)

OTOH - they may be perfect for the song you want to use them for.......!

YMMV.......

Sounds pretty darn good to me.
I thought the toms could have been a little more prominent though.

I agree. Sounds very cool. I'm not into candied-up drums. I like a jazzy sound, which this is. Just maybe need a little more smack to them. I agree about the toms. Maybe give them their own mic.

I think the poster was just using a single stereo mic...so OH, toms mics, etc don't come into play if I am correct. So..you need a GOOD drummer to execute this then...and potentially a really nice environment to record in.

I thought this recording came off sounding just what it is.. a mic out in a room. Very limited bandwidth, etc...and kinda harsh sounding at that too. Realistic, but not sonically full fidelity. It also seemed to favor the right side.

I thought blue bear's drums were kinda sharp sounding too.. and more mono than I would prefer. Sounds like a nice kit other than the high toms sounding like they came from the roto tom family and the last tom kinda dead as compared to the others...and also needing some whack!! to it. HH maybe a little on the loud side too.

say what? how much more width do you need??? I think you've got your MONO button switched in! ;)

huh?

Actually - that's personal preference... I prefer a clean, strong HH a la Steely Dan (and in this case, it was appropriate for the song!)

That clip was a push mix of the drum track/scratch bass from a session 2 years ago.... done for the band as a ref after the session.... (details about the session are here)....
