How do the controllers work?

The instructions for using controllers in n-track are less than minimal, and I know even less about how to make controllers work in a sequencer.

I'm trying to add sustain to a piano track. Here's what I've done so far: I've opened the piano track in piano roll mode. In the window beneath the piano roll I've selected "Controllers" and "64" (the pedal controller). Then I clicked in the window below the piano roll placing a vertical blue line beneath the first measure. That turns the sustain pedal on. Great. But now how do I make the sustain pedal turn off and then back on as if I were lifting and then immediately depressing the sustain pedal on a real piano? Do I just click another vertical line to turn off and then another vertical line to turn on?

Here's another question: what does the height of the vertical line have to do with the sustain? I have noticed that if it's not high enough it won't sustain, but what other function does the height govern?

Thank you for your help.

Nevermind. After searching the web for info on how controllers work, I've solved this mystery. Thanks anyway.
