how do I "post-process" my RY-8 drummachine sound?? [COMP, EQ, ...]

Hi there,

I'm currently recording a song with my drummachine. It's a yamaha RY-8. It sounds very reasonable, and fairly "realistic" when compared to most of the drummachines I know about.

The only thing is.. it sounds a bit "direct" which [among other things] makes it sound less "realistic" than a real drumkit. It lacks sparkling highs as well.

Now, I know that it will never sound like a real drumkit, but still I'm curious how to post-process my sound to fix it up a bit.

I want to add slight compression [not too much, since it's a digital drumsound, which is probably already compressed]. Also I would like to EQ a bit. I don't know how to setup my parameters for those fx.. I cannot find information on the internet regarding post-processing a DRUMMACHINE sound. Enough info on real drums though..

On my drummachine I have NO options for soundprocessing other than volume and pan. So the only thing I can do is post-process the recorded stereo-track.

Any ideas?? I'm especially interested in compression.. But any enhancement-idea is welcome ofcourse.. Thanx in advance.

Greetz,
Saz

Good question Saz - I struggle with this myself. Unfortunately I have no answers, but will watch the post with interest!

Cheers

Yo Saz:

You might want to listen to and try the Boss 770 drum machine. It does have some ambience settings.

But, in the past, I've taken a drum track from my former drum boxes, SR16 and an earlier Yamaha, and by raising the EQ high a bit, you will get a brighter cymbal effect.

I've found that the drums being as dynamic as they are need very little tweaking, especially on the newer machines.

Also, by playing with the panning a bit, not extreme, you can get a softer drum background if that's what your ears want.

I usually record my drum track on mono as that seems to be plenty for my 2816 SIAB.

I used to write the drum programs on my SR16 but that takes so much time. Now, I use the A/B button and have some cool cross-overs of rhythm from the Boss unit.

Hope this helps a bit.

My Boss 670 has some ok sounds but, seems to lack balls when recorded.I used a (gulp, should I say it?) sonic maximizer and slight compression to give it some ummph.I try to pick drum sounds the already have some ambience.

Yo Grinding Man:

Boss 670? What's that?

thanx a lot guyz!!

I'll play a bit with the high frequencies to clean up the cymbal-decay.

I'm pretty much confined to my RY-8 machine at the moment. The track is already recorded, and I'm not yet in the mood to buy a new drummachine yet.

So... I have to process the currently recorded track.

How can I thicken up the snare sound a bit using EQ?

Most of the drumkit sounds acceptable as it is, but the snare sounds a bit too harsh..
