...when you consider that a GREAT song recorded on a cheap, Radio Shack mic is ALWAYS better than a mediocre song recorded on your prized mic. Sure, on first listen a person might be impressed with the quality of a sound but beyond that if the song doesn't inspire it won't matter because the audience isn't listening.
Create and support great music first. Lust after, go in debt to buy and defend your precious gear as a very distant third. And what comes second? Getting a better attitude

On the right source, am SM57 sounds better than a vintage U-67.

Close to 10 years ago. I have used most of the top end mics in my time. I now am a home recordist only and only record myself and friends.
And, on the right source, an SM57 will sound better than a U67.

Many agree that a $100.00 ACM-6802 sounds better than a $4000.00 AKG C-12 (VR)

I've been able to make much better recordings with a 6802 than and AKG C-12. (of course, I've actually been able to make recordings with a 6802--and I've never even used a C-12
)

Depends on the source. The AKG will sound better than the ACM on a favorable source.
It totally depends on how the mic flatters (or does not) the sound. The difference between any 2 mics is how the mic changes the sound. All mics color the sound, just depends on how much and if it is a desireable change. That is why I hate mic shootouts because on that 1 source, ANY mic could win. If this is not true, then I would believe that people should only own 1 type of mic and be done with it (cheap or not).

I know, but I once got the "VR" in hopes of the quality of the original C-12, and like many, was VERY disappointed. I too hate mic-shoot outs.

man... how did they get that one so wrong? i've never read anything remotely good about the c-12 vr. you figure that for the price they're selling them for that they could have done a better job of recreating the old c-12 capsule. i've been told that the circuit is pretty simple-- iirc the nady tcm 1050/1150 / apex 460 circuit (aka the telefunken m-16 mk 1 circuit) is pretty much a copy of the c-12 with a few adjustments.

That's really what it boils down to. The teflon capsule just does not sound as good as the brass multi-chambered capsule. You would think that AKG would get this after so many years and experts talking and complaining, but no. So they end up selling mics like the C12VR and "The tube" based pretty much on the name alone. I've heard engineers call them expensive door stops.
