And I can understand why people may not like Neil himself. I think there are MANY bands where the music is fantastic, and the musicians are great, but they're all ****heads, or at least people I wouldn't feel I had to like just because they're talented.

You may not know anything about him. Is that the same as not liking him? I don't understand what he may have done/not done to make you think he is a ****head.

I may be off base here, I'm not a rush fan and therefore should probably not make this comment, but I've never heard Neil Peart play anything that he didn't overplay. .

How about Rivendell, Resist, Stars Look Down, or Panacea?

Or the fills in Bastille Day...

The guy has incredible meter, limb interdependence, has chops that I watched him do live and still had no clue how he did it (Red Barchetta)...

But other than that, yeah, I can see where other drummers wouldn't like him.

Hey, Rami, you ever see Guy Nadon perform?

Exactly. I respect him as a drummer, and even like some of their music...But they don't "move" me. I don't feel it, and that's what's important to me.

So, by extension, I'm not a huge Neil Peart fan, even though I realise he can play circles around me. Having said that, I've seen them live 3 times and enjoyed it.

Then again, if we want to talk about getting blown away by a drummer, I go to Drummerworld and watch Buddy Rich playing a 4-piece kit in a 3-piece suit, and it's "Neil Who?"

Before reading this thread I had never heard of Rush or Neil Pert (well, actually I guess new there was a band called Rush). If I have heard their music, I didn't know it.

I hate them for that.

My brother is a drummer, and use to be up to par, he hasn't played so much lately, but he dislikes Rush.

I have heard other drummers say they dislike Rush also.

Isn't that like a racecar driver disliking Nascar?

Well, I'm not exactly keen on Rush.
Why? because Neil Peart always seemed to play like a drum machine. There was never any swagger in his playing.....the very Reason I started playing drums was John Bonham.

Just for the hell of it, I'd like to see Peart tackle "Living Loving Maid". :p

I'm not sure he could do it. I mean, his timing was always so on the beat, that I'm not sure if he can really lay back behind it in the pocket.

Aside from that. I Hate Geddy Lee's voice. it just always annoyed the hell out of me.

Rush had a few songs that I really liked, like "Vital Signs" and "Witch Hunt". (I hate "Tom Sawyer" and "Red Barchetta", though.)

Now granted, he had some killer tom licks, and rolls, and "Xanadu" is freaking awesome...but for the most part, I just never was a Rush fan.

And to be honest, I preferred the stuff he was doing after he studied with Freddie Gruber - at that point, he began to develop a groove to his playing - but most of the people who are long time Rush fans didn't like stuff like "Dog Years".

I've got nothing against rush, and obviously Neil Peart is a more amazing drummer than I could be in a hundred years, but I don't really like his drumming... Everybody looks to him as some kind of God and I don't really get it. Sure, he's an incredible player, but I'd rather listen to a drummer who can change the feel of a song, a drummer is there to make the band sound better - Mickey Curry is a good example of that IMO.

And sadly, most people don't know who Mickey Curry is, but I do. He is an unreal drummer, and his Bonham fetish shines through at times. LOL

For those who don't know, he played with Hall & Oates for quite a while, as well as Bryan Adams.... Probably his most famous work, but also most unknown for is he played on The Cult's big selling release (the one with "Fire Woman" and "Sweet Soul Sister" on it) and has done tons of Rock session work.

I was lucky enough to meet him in the late 80's , and he was really cool - and we totally had the Bonham thing in common.

all you haters just need to begin the day with a friendly voice, a companion unobtrusive. plays that song that's so elusive and the magic music makes your morning mood.

Worst song ever!

At least Quote "Bytor and the Snow Dog!" :p

It's not a matter of hating them, I'm kind of indifferent to them really. If they come on the radio, I change the channel. I'd rather listen to Pink (as in the female singer, not Floyd) than Rush at this point. At least I'd like to doink her. LOL

Oh...

Drummers we would doink?

Sheila E. ...

Carola Grey...

Hilary Jones....

Ummm... Ginger Baker was that chick on Gilligan's Island right?

:p

Then you seriously need to sit and listen to Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato or the second side of Hemispheres. It will change your understanding very quickly.

I used to be a big Peart fan. I still am, just not on the same level. Neil's good, but there are sooooo many who are better. Sitting down in a room with Dave Weckl, talking and watching him play is a life changing experience.

...until he asks you to fix his laptop.

I named one cat Bonham and one Neil.

I do detest Mike Portray aka Dream Theater though.

ok. Im done now.

Carry on.

I don't mind NP, but I don't think he is going to be the first drummer I would call for anything other than doing a RUSH song.

Too mechanical and stiff for my tastes.
