Hooking Up my Allen and Heath

31 channel allen and heath saber series that I want to integrate into my computer recording for live band situations
I use an iMac to record into
i have effects i want to be able to run on many channels at the same time

yes... I have been using just my imac, and my interface until now. but a friend of mine needed to rent his studio out for living space so I got all this great equipment. I just want the simplest set up possible. I'm only gonna use the board as a preamp for a live set up.

From my knowledge, you will have to have an A/D converter, and run the outs of the board into that, then that into your iMac. I may be mistaken though.

I don't know that board but if you want multiple tracks to the Mac you will need a multi-channel interface. Generally FX are run thru sends and returns on individual channels on the board but for later adjustment in the box you would want dry signals.

Do some reading. RTFMs if you got any with the gear or go to the mfg websites and print the pdf manuals - they should all be available.

By that I don't mean Homerecording. This is an excellent place for info you need. I mean the Studio Building section. For some reason lots of people post gear questions in here when they should probably be in The Rack or Digital Recording and Computers. You'll get lots more responses in the right place. The only people that come in here are acoustics nerds.

If you're just using the board for mic pres and taking the direct outs you'll be limited to the number of inputs into your DAW.

If you use the subs you could mix drums to a stereo pair. I guess it depends how much you plan on editing later and if you're replacing drum sounds or comping solos or whatever.

Missed the part about FX........

Ummmmm........... delays /reverbs/panning FX usually go on aux busses. EQ's and compressors usually go in series with the voice/instrument, via an insert.
