What will be the criteria to judge what songs are gonna
be included on Comp II? In otherwords, I would very much like
to be included on #2 as well as every-1 else would, so who will pick what songs will be on #2?

QQ, there is no "judging". We sort of thought of that and kind of half assed tried it the first time...but it just turned out to not be so cool. Just because a guy might have a song that everybody thinks is horrid doesn't mean he doesn't deserve his spot on the CD! I think the CD is more of a celebration (not to sound gay) of the crazy ass little community we've got going on here. The more variety, the better!

The song I put on the first comp cd never would have been on there if people had been voting :) Maybe that would have been less embarassing...hmm.... haha

At any rate, you pick the song that you think represents you best and you submit it...that's all there is to it!

Ok, I was thinking about this...

how about we just make the minimum posts 50 and call it good? That's a high enough number to overcome the problems I was having...and it's not overly restrictive.

To say that S8-N can't be on the next comp cd because he hasn't posted enough messages in the past X months is silly, when the guy's been around here on and off for YEARS. There will be lots of little exceptions like that I'm thinking.

What if there are a hundred submissions?

How does the amount get culled down?

David,

That's a good question. I was worried about that the last time in fact....however, to my (our) suprise, most people were just plain too shy to be on the comp. We started with about 30+ people wanting to be on it, and I had to beg a lot of people just to get the 20 that are on volume 1!!!!

This time around I am expecting 50 or so contributions, and I think it'll be great. Without enhanced crap, I can probably do ~20 songs per CD, so the costs for the next one might not be much higher.

At the end of this I'll be able to determine how the total costs PER SUBMISSION, and then I'll simply require that submitters pay that amount. It might be $10, it might be $30, but as long as they pay up, we can make CD's. Then we might sell them to the general public for less than that amount....it depends really.

I think I am also going to keep a couple hundred dollars from the profits as a buffer for the next CD...room to breath if you will. This project will of course remain non-profit, and any money that is made (over costs) will be donated to the BBS.

Maybe in a few years we'll be putting out comps with a hundred songs! That would be cool IMHO!

Slackmaster,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Have you though of doing a double set?

You could probable include all per your estimate
number of submissions.

Looking forward to receiveing the current CD.

David Artis

Great - I hopefully will be finiding out for myself anyday now.

me too, me too!
count me in Slack, on putting in a tune, or just helping money wise. After listening to the 1st vol., and I mean listening, had it 1.5 days and have heard every track at least 3 times. I don't think my stuff is worthy, but I am all for you doing this again. Shit, man, I might not ever buy another store bought cd. I'll just wait for vol.2,3,4,5,6,7, etc. he he he he he he he

I've been listening to Volume 1 too and really enjoying it for all sorts of reasons. :D I'd like to get one of mine on Volume 2.

Anyway, I think for these and other reasons, Volume 2 is going to be swamped with submissions by comparison. Perhaps you (we?) should start giving some thought to criteria of selection:

1 random - a lottery

2 public selection - a vote

3 seniority - longest on the site has priority (ha!)

4 private selection - by committee. Lose friends, get enemies.

Number 3 is rational and has a lot to do with the site, number 4 is elitist (but we could vote for the selection committee), number 2 is fair but would get ugly, and number 1 is the safe way out.

Well...let's cross that bridge when it comes time. I thought the first one would swamp us with submissions, yet we only got 20 in the end (started out with like 30+ people wanting to be involved). It's easy to over-estimate interest...a lesson I learned personally the hard way several times over. People lose interest fast when it comes time to actually do something (I'm not excluding myself from this group!).

I think that if we stick to the one deadline plan, and make sure the contributor sends the appropriate funds, that we'll probably be ok. The minimum post rules (whatever they turn out to be) will also help a little bit.

The thing is, really, that even if we get 50 contributions, I can probably cram them onto 3 CD's. The first compilation actually could have fit on 1 CD but the enhanced stuff pushed it over the limit (it was VERY close). Maybe we should say...the song limit has to be 5 minutes?

Also, I'm learning a lot by seeing how fast this first batch actually sells. Of course it hasn't been properly advertised so it's too soon to get a good feel for how things "could" be in a perfect situation. But as long as we require a high enough "entry" fee to cover most of the initial costs of having enough CD's made (maybe one for each contributor + 50 or + 75), then this technically shouldn't even be a problem.

In fact, the more contributors, the better off we may be financially!

This first CD set broke even just recently....that was after ~20 CD's. Now, only about half of the contributors actually kicked in their money. If we'd have done the one deadline thing initially, then we never would have had a problem getting the necessary funding! In fact, with the pre-orders from non-contributors, we'd have started out ahead...or I simply would've had 100 sets made instead of 75...something like that.

BTW, I'd like to announce that as of about 4:00AM this "evening", all 75 sets have been finished, so those that haven't already sold are ready to ship! I can ship orders within say 7-10 days of receiving your payments! (e.g. if I'm expecting several checks I like to wait and do the mailings all at once)

A brand new guy!!!

I'm brand new here...this is my first post. (I'm a regular R.A.P. guy)
I'd like to contribute a song from my collection, but I can't decide!!!
Soooo....
y'all do a newcomer a favour and visit www.mp3.com/glendarae and tell me what you dig...
I'll send the money with the submission.

Thanks for the offer my fellow programmer!

I don't think that there will be any enhanced shit on the next volume....it was just a little too time consuming and really, people were just too lazy to submit information...crazy as that may sound....so content is the problem almost more than the design and flow considerations.

Slackmaster 2000

Also do we have a vague idea when this might occur? I want to be sure I have something ready for whenever you decide to set a deadline. I know you don't have a definite date yet but just a rough idea.

September 1st would be the earliest...so probably sometime after that.

Slack,

We are staring to track my son's band here next week, so hopefully there would be something ready to submit by the time Vol II gets underway.

This raises a question for dumb-arse me though..............would having a track on the HR Comp CD compromise the artist(s), should they wish to "release" the same track on their own independant CD?

Looking forward to receiving Vol I.

ChrisO

The artists still own the rights to their music. HOWEVER, the contract they sign says that we (the Hr.comp group) have non-exclusive rights to duplicate and distribute the music paying no royalty to the artist, for a certain length of time, after which they can opt out (contributors on HR.COMP Volume I can get out right now if they want, but we're not making another run so it doesn't matter), meaning that we can't make more copies of the comp with the artist's song on it.

In short, we get to sell the song on hr.comp (and only hr.comp), and the artist gets to continue to sell the song however he/she/they chose. Technically they should not enter into an *exclusive* contract with another entity without first recognizing their obligation to hr.comp.

The contract also has options for radio play and advertising, giving the artist some control over just what can be done with their music within the scope of the project.

All in all it's a "good faith" agreement...hr.comp isn't about making money and we haven't run into any artists yet that were soley motivated by money. Just make sure that your son understands all this when the time comes...that he is helping to support the free exchange of information on the BBS, in exchange for some publicity.

In other words, Ausrock,...

Send Slack one of your son's B-sides, if you think there will be any chance of conflict down the road.;)
