home studio set up help :: noob

hey everyone i am a noob. i have done a little research and thought i would post up my possible first home studio equipment. tell me what you think and any advice is welcome!

so i will be using this home studio for just myself to record single tracks at a time, music ranging from blues to metal.

so for my software i plan on using Audacity.

here is the mixer i plan to use. is this overkill for my first home studio? it seems decently priced and has good reviews.

i also am building a new computer and plan to use this sound card. i will have 4gb's of ram to start off and a HD that runs at 7200rpm.

i have not picked out any speakers yet. i am open to any ideas. preferably keeping it in the $50-$100 range.

Hi there..

I think you'll find that the general advice these days is NOT to buy a mixer / soundcard combo but to buy a decent interface using either USB or Firewire, which has decent preamps / phantom power onboard and at least 2 inputs.

In terms of a mic, yes, that's a mic, and it's "industry standard" for various things like miking electric guitar cabs, but it would be a good idea, if you can stretch, to get a condenser mic as well.

You may think you only want to record single tracks at a time, but that's extremely limiting.

And there are better software options than Audacity.

Check out the other "I'm a noob and I want to record" threads in this forum, and no doubt Tim will be along shortly to do his usual "everything a noobie needs to know about recording" post.

You might find that you get a better result for about the same $ based on the advice you are shortly to receive...
