Believe it or not...just a Q-Tip and some water (squeeze out the excess) works fine...or a light soution of dish soap & water if the roller is real dirty.

I read about that on Terry's Rubber Rollers website...(good source for rollers):

http://www.terrysrubberrollers.com/index.shtml

I've tried just the Q-Tip and water...and it works.

Now I will only use the rubber conditioner if/when the roller ever gets real hard/slick.

Yup, and for a roller with stubborn oxide on it trying rubbing firmly with a piece of old T-shirt damp with water, or soap and water solution (mild detergent) OR window cleaner. I often clean up a new to me pinch roller that has been neglected with a piece of T-shirt and window cleaner. Follow my Ampex MM-1000 thread and you can see you that one cleaned up.

For rollers with grooved tires (like tach rollers and such) use an old toothbrush.

I dunno about using Windex...that stuff has ammonia.

86 the windex... mild solution of dish soap.. rinse with clear water...

I bought the Tascam 488 in 1992 and was always told not to use isopropyl on the pinch rollers or anything rubber for that matter, as it would crack it. But I've always used it. I've used the 488 extensively all these years. I always clean up before and after a session. If it's a long session, I'd clean up in the middle of it. I'm still on the same pinch roller. The consensus outside of that is washing up liquid and water on a cotton bud {sorry guys, I'm English ! I can't get used to calling them Q-tips :D} or simple spit. I use isopropyl. My 488 is a hardened boozer......
