Yo Wright 1294 -BINGO:

I would suggest you forget a 4 tracker. You will be limited and you will have to bounce tracks and bouncing will make you lose control of tweaking the "single" tracks you recorded.

So, what to do?

If you are a beginner, and I consider myself still beginning, buy or demo a Yamaha MD8. It's easy to use and one Data disc will last a long time as they are completely erasable. If you muck up a take when you have the rhythm down, you just hit a button and go back to start and do it over -- or, you can "edit" if you want to try that but it's a bit difficult on the MD8 and difficult for beginners.

Once you cut your chops on an 8 or 16 tracker, you can then look at all of the other options: DAW [Digital Audio Work Stations] and computer based programs and etc. etc. etc.

You will need a reverb box with an MD8 and a mic or two. Reverb boxes are not expensive but get a good one to start: Lexicon or Yamaha or Alesis Midiverb3.

To go back to the beginning, starting with a 4 tracker and a "band" or even a solo person, puts you in a limited recording position.

Or instead of buying one of the 4-tracks ..... use YOUR computer, because you will probably wind up going in that direction (computer) anyway.

peace .......

i'm a solo artist and just the thought of only having 4 tracks freaks me out.. you'll wanna record your drums from at the very least 2 places.. you might suddently find that you'd want a synthesizer too during a build, or perhaps a few backing vocals.. don't take the chance and buy 4 track.. get 8.. (at least..)
you also have to remember a little thing called eq.. would you like to set up the perfect eq for the guitar on one track and then have to delete it cause you have to put both the lows and the highs of the drums on seperate tracks?

Do you mean Can you hook all the instruments up at once? Yes, if you have enough inputs. Also for vocals, the 4-track will need to have mic. pre-amps otherwise the signal from the mic. will be weak.

but

if you can only afford 4-track you can supplement it with a low cost mixer for more flexability. (read: inputs)
