First spray a gentle mist of water on the album to be played. Pump a shot or so from a plant sprayer. The water smooths things out. It also dirties up the needle with fuzzy lint after each album so wipe it clean each time. Second, use Goldwav. It is a pretty decent software demo that is fully operational (as long as you can squeeze in all your effort in 150 clicks). Goldwav has some real sweet noise reduction and gates that let you clean it up fairly well.
