Hisses and pops

First spray a gentle mist of water on the album to be played. Pump a shot or so from a plant sprayer. The water smooths things out. It also dirties up the needle with fuzzy lint after each album so wipe it clean each time. Second, use Goldwav. It is a pretty decent software demo that is fully operational (as long as you can squeeze in all your effort in 150 clicks). Goldwav has some real sweet noise reduction and gates that let you clean it up fairly well.

You really need a good turntable & a decent stilus (stylus, stilys???? how the hell do you spell that?). Some old nasty needle isn't going to do your albums justice...since quality is what you seem to be after. Balance the needle such that it is barely putting any pressure on the record...it'll skip easier but won't wear the vinyl or needle as much.

Also "clean" each album before you play em. I'm sure that good cleaner and a brush can still be had SOMEWHERE. This will lubricate the album (as noted above) and remove any dust particles which can cause popping & hissing.

If the album is already scratched up & abused, then Goldwave does have "pop" filters and such (I think) as Even said.

Being new to this recording bit, how do you eliminate the hisses and pops when recording from old LP's? Using Sonic Acid and/or grabber to comvert to WAV files and from there to CD burn. Analog equipment.
