hiss after panning

A friend of mine gave me some tracks he recorded with his band and he wants me to mix them. Since they only recorded the rhythm guitar part once, i decided to double it by copying and pasting the same parts and pan one hard left and the other hard right to get a wider mix.
Strangly enough I get a very distinct hiss sound after panning them which is not present when I play just one part centrered or even two parts centered.
If anybody could tell me what causes this and how to get rid of that hiss, that would be great.
 
FYI, copying and pasting the same exact parts and then panning won't do anything but make the part louder. If you delay it or apply some fx, it can have a widening effect but also will probably cause issues in mono...
 
Mono is when you have the same thing coming out of both speakers equally.
stereo is when you have something different coming out of both speakers.
If you copy something pan it one way and pan the copy the other way, you have just wasted 30 seconds making what you started with. Leave the one track alone panned center and throw a stereo chorus on it.
 
I guess I should've been more clear. I did not copy and paste the exact same parts, but I copied the guitar part from the second verse to the first verse and vice versa, from the second chorus to the first etc. and panned one hard left and the other hard right, so it would be a real stereo track (with different sounds coming out of each speaker).
I do know I would otherwise end up with the same mono track I started out with..
 
Try reversing the phase on one of those tracks and see what happens-Richie
