If the offending group is singing a monotone as you suggest you could pitch shift it to a note that works as a drone for the entire melody or mute them for the sections where the available drone won't.
I can empathise thought as I had 6 groups of 4 kids record as groups with kids engineering. It took me a VERY LONG time to tweak things to semi acceptable but they had a great experience.
