These mics are omni's though aren't they? My room is terrible so I wouldn't really be able to use them... at the moment ;). Sadly the closest store of type you're describing is pretty far & it's B&Q - don't think they'll have anything other than fiberglass insulation. Looks like I'm stuck at buying on the internet & prices don't seem that encouraging :(

PS I'm selling a few things as well, on eBay I go buy the name of lonetraider :p

sorry, my computer started jacking off, it's an old machine and has dirty habits

i'm skint, but am wanting to delve into acoustic treatment before i spend anything else on anything else. i was thinking about buying cheap duvets & pillows to attach to the walls and ceilings, would this work or am i just talking some major league bullshit here. I don't care about being too warm, i'll drink lots of water if it gets hot & wear an ice helmet.

i was searching for an ice helmet and this thread popped up.

ice helmets are great their icy. and its summer time so everyones probably getting their ice helmets going.
i was thinking of buying a new one or making one myself.

To be honest, it may be a lot dearer but you really should get one made to fit. Making it yourself is a little time consuming and in the end you'll be that run off your feet manufacturing you'll need a few ice helmets. There are currently no uk suppliers but I think you can import them direct from canada for a reasonable P&P fee. Remember and send a good photo of your head though because you'll have to pay to return it if it doesn't fit.

With the absorption panels they'd be perfect. Check out my recordings here. Overheads were recorded with MSH 2s and acoustic guitars with X-Qs. I have tiny rooms(9'x5' and 7'x6') and modest acoustic treatment. Ok the recordings aren't great, but it was my first attempt at recording in my new studio(and hadn't recorded for a couple of years before it, and even then i had limited experience). B&Q don't have anything like that. Hmm, there must be something.

Where abouts in the UK are you? Stevenston(from your ebay), North Ayrshire or Oxfordshire? If Ayrshire, you're not far from me. I'm in Prestwick. There Must be something in Irvine. If not, then definitely Ayr. Sorry if it's the other Stevenston.

I found you on ebay. Says you've got no listings, then i found the boss flanger.

Stevenston? I did live there a month and a bit ago, i now live in ardrossan. I updated paypal & ebay  that's something I'll have to look into. If there's something in irvine that'd be perfect ;)

There's a Jewson in Irvine and First Stop in Ardrossan! I'm sure either of those would be able to order them in for you or put you onto someone else who can.

The money you save at these places can go to a new mic or 2(matched pair) ;) haha

excellent, i'll try and find first stop tomorrow and check things out there first before i go a wandering in irvine.

went to first stop, the guy said he'd get back to me each time i've gone in so i think i'll have to look somewhere else. I'll phone around to see if i can get at least one quote!!

Try Jewson in Irvine, or try phoning. I just phoned them and they(Rowan Timber) gave me the price over the phone.

the rs45 100mm is £21 & the 50mm is £22, i phoned another first stop centre and they gave me a price within 5 minutes. the guy representing first stop in ardrossan has yet to get back to me. what's the difference? I'll go with the 100mm pack of five and i'll tell you all how i get on later.

The 100mm is better for corners, but 50mm doubled works exactly the same. I'd pay the extra £1 for flexability. You don't need 100mm in the first reflection points. Did you find out how much the RS60 is? It might be better, but dearer.

RS60, no I wasn't sure if that would have the same acoustic properties & going by how... helpful  the guys I've been dealing with are, I probably couldn't have counted on their advice.

By the way did I say £21? Nope slap some VAT onto that! It was pretty obvious I'm not in the trade business so why not quote me a price inclusive of VAT? These people are all the same

I'm going to see how easy the rocksilk is to work with, but I've drawn up plans for a 2m x 2m isolation booth, but considering how much material is costing, It'll be a while before I can start work!!

My studio has sloping ceilings so where would be the best place to position these traps? Should I just keep them in the corner on the ground or elevate them up a bit so that they're in the corner & hugging the point in which the sloped ceiling meets the wall?

What's your plans like for the iso booth? We should be able to help with that.

Is the ceiling just sloping one way, or does it go up to a peak? Could you draw out a plan of your room, showing where the ceiling slopes, and where you are putting the booth(Just use ms paint, if you have nothing else).

I have my bass traps roughly equidistant between floor and ceiling.

RS60 should be better for bass. When you order it, ask for aprice on RS60. If it's too dear leave it, if not get that for your 4".

You might be able to get the price down if you buy more of it(trade price). Maybe the 5x4" and 10x2". With the 2" left over, you could make panels for the iso booth. Do you have fabric for your panels? I have loads left over if you'd be interested? Red, Blue, canvas and black denim(I don't know how much i have left off each).

You asked for it!! :D

Here's a bitmap of the room;

The isolation booth is something for the future, but basically it's going to be an internal space of 2mx2m. Internal wall of 9mm sterling board, then 100mm rocksilk, then the outer wall of 9mm sterling board. the booth will be made of these modular panels around 1mx1m connected to each other by external brackets. Each panel's internal wall is connected to the outer wall by 4 blocks of wood sandwitched between neoprene. It'll cost a fair amount of money, probably around £300. My only conserns being the strength of the 9mm sterling board, I can't afford anything thicker, so I may have to reinforce the four floor panels & the door frame.

Will it be in this room, or another?

Why not use plasterboard or MDF? It will be a lot heavier/denser, and will therefore isolate better. It should be a lot stronger also, and should look a lot better and be easier decorated. I wouldn't put rocksilk in the walls. For insulation between the walls, just use the cheapest insulation you an buy. I really doesn't matter as long as you have something. If you could afford it, you could build 2 frames, one for the inner and one for outer, which if left unconnected and sealed properly, will provide much better isolation.

I've drawn up, with paint from the sketchup file, a placement plan for your room. If you go with what i said, 5x4" and 10x2", then I'd use 4x 4" in the corners, and half one for behind the monitors. With the 10x 2", 1 on the ceiling, 2 on the back wall, and 1 halved on the side walls. You will have 6 left, and you can use these for more on the ceiling/side walls, or in your booth. Will you use the closet in that room as a booth(vocals and guitars)? I would.
