Hi-hats and cymbals.

Zyldjian New Beats, but try out a bunch if you can. I choose mine over ten other pairs. I went through a period in the 80's where I went completely to Paiste. After breaking every one of those, I came back to Zyldjian and have been totally satisfied ever since.

If you go to the manufacturers website, they have soundclips of each cymbal. That is the best way to see the difference between them. Every cymbal sounds different, but it will give you an idea.

my cymbals are zildjian A's and K's with a sungle wuhan china. i've got 2 pairs of 14" NewBeats and they sound completely different. one set is "lighter" sounding and the other "darker". combining the two sets makes for interesting sounds.....but they're both flavors of the "new beat sound".

these days i'm leaning towards something a little more "chicky", and have had my eyes on the A Mastersounds (not the A Custom). i like those a lot, but the price has been too much for them to be a priority right now.

my ride is a K Custom Dark. nice smooth wash, lovely overtones, and the ping is solidly there but not overbearing. great for some styles of music. for others, you'd be better off with an A Ping Ride or something (and i *really* love the Sabian Paragon 22in Ride for that sound--it's essentially an old Zildjian A).

crashes and splashes are a melange of A's, A Customs, K's, you name it. i favor smaller crashes--18in is just too big and gongy for my tastes. i like my crashes to be "punctuation marks"--to get in and get out quickly. the 12in wuhan china does that nicely as well.

above all, you need play the cymbals from ANY maker before you buy them. much like guitars, cymbals are hand-crafted and will have minor tonal variations among ones in the same line. you need to purchase the ones that "speak" to you.

cheers,
wade

Check this out!

I got a red chicklet for my earlier post about newbeats being the most recorded hihats in history (which is a fact BTW, not an opinion).

The offended person told me: "Hey man, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Fuck Off."

Apparently, this person is a 5 year old who doesn't realize that I wasn't stating my opinion, nor putting down anyone else's opinion, merely stating a fact.

Apparently this 5 year old thinks that everyone is entitled to an opinion ...except me.

It takes all kinds... :D :D :D

I've gotten two red chicklets for mentioning Studio Projects (oops I did it again! Hope I don't get caught...) He said "SP sucks dumbass"...twice!

Jacob

That's DJL. He got banned a long time ago in a tirade against Studio Projects and Alan Hyatt. Now he has registered under a new pseudonym and lurks around in the shadows waiting to pounce on anyone who says...(looking around)..."Studio Projects"!

No one really knows what he looks like, except they say he has a boner shaped just like a C-1.

And he doesn't brush his teeth.

Well, Im not surprised, Zildjian is probably the biggest name n cymbals. Even non musicians know zildjian. But I'm disapointed with their newer stuff, it seems they are dropping in quality. My teacher has old 60's 70's and 80's ziljians... very very nice cymbals. But the new ones are very inconsistent in quality. I have even heard A Customs that sound like the ZBTs a few cymbals away.

Newer Zildjians are not aged as long as what they used to sell in the 70s and 80s. The formula and manufacturing are still the same, but the cymbals are too young to sounds as good "on the rack". If you really play them, after a while they open waaaaaaay up.

Hmmmm.... almost makes me want to play Zildjian again.

Naaaawww!!! PAISTE ALL THE WAY!!! :D

My school has 13" Zildjian K's on a pearl session....they sound beatiful. Definitly would recommend them, and would have bought them if i had the money.

Paiste makes the best shit :D . Actually, my drum teacher says that UFIP makes the best, and I tried one of is UFIP chinas and it KICKED ASS. But they are way too expensive... But I could probably get a good deal on eBay. But my favorite china hands down is my Paiste 20" Sound Creation New Dimensions Dark China... dont be fooled by the dark crap, its a very pwoerful trashy china. And of course there are those loves Han Chi and Wuhan chinas :D .

I have a UFIP splash that is the best sounding splash I've ever heard. One of my buddies has all UFIPs and his ride cuts like no other.

There is still something special about old A Zildjians, though. You can just count on them to always sound right!

I feel in love with the sound of the dark energy hats. Just gotta find a good deal but they are exactly what i am looking for. Im planning on going to buy a guitar at guitar center pretty soon and while im there im gonna check out dark energy hats. Hey "Philgood" what do you think of the dark energy hats??

The Dark Energy hats are magical. But if you wanna buy, I suggest that you buy from http://www.massmusic.net/shop/index.php?shop=1&cat=1202

They have the best prices, and Paiste is known for their consistency. You will not get the same exact sound as the website, but it will be very close (or at least thats my experience with ordering paiste cymbals off the web).

Let me ask you whats your full cymbal setup?? and what's UFIP?

All of them sound different - even the same make. Do yourself a favor and bring a freind to a music store where you can listen to and play some different sets. Otherwise it's all a crapshoot.

First off, your right. The cymbal u buy will not sound the same as the clip. But (maybe im lucky) I have gotten pretty satisfactory results with buying online. But my dark energy hats arent as sizzly as the ones in the clip, and they are a bit brighter sounding (still sound great though). Where I live, they only have one Paiste in stock: a 16" 2002 crash, and since all their ZIldjian and Sabian cymbals sound like crap (or at least the heavier ones) I just buy Paiste from Massmusic. UFIP is an Italian cymbal company, who, from what I've heard, makes the best cymbals on the market. But at insanely expensive prices. As for my cymbal set (all paiste except for some wuhans): My hi hats are a 14" dark energy top with a 14" Signature sound edge bottom. My crashes are (all signature) 18" full crash, 18" Power Crash, 20" power crash, 19" dark energy crash. I have a 20" sound formula (discontinued) silk crash/ride. My rides are a 21" dry heavy ride for louder stuff and a 22" dark energy ride for lighter stuff (and crashing). 10" and 12" signature splashes. And 20" SOund Creations New DImensions (discontinued) China and an 18" 3000 (discontinued) Novo China. ANd 12": and 14" wuhan chinas (fucking sweet, especially since they cost me less than $50 together :D )
Everything except the 12" splash and the 22" dark energy ride were bought used, since I cant afford the new stuff.

I think im better of buying used as well because I dont have that type of $ and I have to buy a lot of equipment other than cymbals.

I notice that you are 17, so are probably in the same position as me. Wanting the best resuts for as little money as poss. Well i suppose everyone's like that, but especially us young'uns. I have a full setup of Stagg DH series and i love them. I suppose anything seems great after ZBTs though. I'm not so keen on the hats and ride(cause i tried to save money and bought 12" hats and a 19" crash ride) but with a little bit of gaffer tape, I've tamed the unwanted sounds. I love the crashes though. Try them out if you get a chance. They record really well too(in my opinion).
