... or anyone else using a 244 with an impedence transformer on the inputs. are there any tricks, other than using short mic cables, for battling rf interference? maybe a quad cable?

RFI's a tough issue. It can be hard to beat or isolate.
Everyone who's using XLR balanced type mics and cables with the 244 is using the XLR(F)-1/4"(M) transformer-adaptors.
Balanced cabling is less susceptible to RFI, but again, it can be a tough problem to beat.
You really shouldn't have RFI at all, unless there's an offending device or unit, of some sort or other. Worst case, is that you may be picking up RFI off high voltage transmission wires in the outside environment, but usually it's a TV, computer monitor, air conditioner, or some other common household appliance.
