Just got them today. I bought the Demo version in silver color. Thanks for your input Danny - they do sound amazing. Now the question is where do I place them in my small room. Here is a cheap diagram, Length 10' and Width is 11'. The problem is when I stand beside my Synth it's about 3' to the left of my desk. Where should I place the monitors so when I sit down and stand by my syths I can hear exactly the same ( please be as precise as possible ). Also since I'm new to the whole ( High end, low end and frequency stuff ) could you please explain these settings and which one do I use for what purposes:

1: 80Hz High Pass
2: Boundary Compensation
3: HF + 1.5 dB Above 2.2 kHz
4: HF - 1.5 dB Above 2.2 kHz
5: Nominal configuration.

Thanks again.

P.S. And to all of you seeking advice, listen to the man of wisdom.

Hi Rubo,

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the Jbl LSR25's also... would like to hear more of your thoughts after you have had a lil more time to use them, keep us posted. I have a smaller room with my recording gear in it and was wondering if the small LF speaker in the monitors can produce a good tight bass sound, I'm sure its subjective. I saw Musicians Friend has also lowered the price on these monitors..... great timing.... lol...

gamut1 - jump on that offer while you can. Although I'm not a pro - it's the opposite, but these small ones do have a nice low end. You just have to position them right. If I sit about 2-3 feet - I don't hear a lot of bass, but when I get about 7-8, wow totally different sound - the sound becomes very full with lots of bass. I had the Alesis Monitor Ones, can't even compare the two. I've tried different types of music with these, although for me different means House , Trance and Techno. When I put the track called Afro Medusa by Pasillda - this house track was number one in the UK charts for about a month, it has lots of base and percussions - very well rounded sound - that's why I always test any audio system with this track. On my Alesis ones when I played the same track and positioned them in the same place, it would sound all muddy and way too much base, but on 25s just perfect. To sum up these monitors will give you a very nice tight bass, unless you're into Jungle music or Drum & Base then you don't need a sub to use with them. For $500 you'll never get a better deal. Boy, am I glad that I didn't buy Genelecs or 20/20s.

power rating?

Hi Robo,

Glad to hear the input on the LSR25's, I think I will order mine today. I do have another question for you though, It seems like in searching the reviews on the speakers, I seem to see two different colored speakers. One is a dark looking kinda greyish color, and the other seems to be silver looking. In reading the reviews I have read that the "silver" looking speaker is 100watts on the LF and 50watts on the HF . And then I read another article that said they were 80Watts on the LF and 40watts on the HF? Can you tell me what it says on yours.... it seems the ones I see at musicians friend or the "darker looking set" . Is that how yours look? thanks

Both are the same, in the specs it says 40/80, but you can tweak it up to 50/100 - I think. Mine are silver, usually stores sell the dark colored ones. Because my pair is a demo version which was used once at a trade show so they picked the silver pair which looks more attractive, but it's just the color nothing else.

Good to hear more positive input on the 25's...think I'll buy em' :)

Funny thing happened today. I live on the 1st floor, and every 3-4 days this guy comes to mow the lawn. He comes about 8 AM when I'm a sleep, and gets so close to my window that I almost jump up every time he turns his mover on. Well, today I positioned my LSR right beside the window, with blinds close and opened the window, so he didn't see me. I found the fattest and loudest base track I could find, put it up to the highest volume, paused it, and put on my headphones. When he came back again with the mower turned on, I let him have it. You should have seen him, he thought he got shot or something. I talked to him for a minute after that, now no more 8 AM mowing, he promised to do it after 12.

lol

Don't risk blowing your speakers though... I think I'll jump into these monitors, I trust sjoko2's oppinion... If you can find anywhere to buy these in Canada please post a link, or your lowest price anywhere, please. thanks

sorry for being so damn lazy was having a hard time finding them.
here's a link for 500 for both, this is great much cheaper than the event 20/20 bas I was originally going to get, much more in my budget now :)

hey rubo4....

you said: "To sum up these monitors will give you a very nice tight bass, unless you're into Jungle music or Drum & Base then you don't need a sub to use with them. "

what would you think about hiphop??? It's not quite drum & base, but it is oriented around base quite a bit. I have a feeling that too high of base would probably not be good except to sound good, and I'd probably overestimate how loud the base is on a track with something like the Event 20/20 bas, or atleast that's what the local music store guy said. I don't know what to think...? what can you tell me from your experience?

A tight punchy bass would be alright I think, I'm not looking to shake my house or anything... Also how much would a good sub be to make up for the difference if I find myself unsatisfied...?

I ordered a set today, I think they should be ok for what I do, which is mostly originals and cover tunes and but not super heavy bass. I do wish they were here to try out but no one is carrying them. My room is not huge so the bass should be plenty with the volume pushed up a lil. Thanks for the info all :D

Hey Rubo, regarding your speaker placement question:

First thing I'd do is study some of John Sayers material on acoustics, which is now at the SAE website http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html

In an absolutely ideal scenario you would have your speakers placed head hight (when you're sitting of cause), in a 60 degree triangle, the crossing point being about a foot behind your head.
It sohould say so in the 25's manual.

If your speakers are close to the walls, or in the corners, you might want to consider placing some absorbent material against the walls behind the monitors.

How do you like them sofar?

I really like the monitors, but also I have lots of glass in my room instead of walls. It's really more like a solarium then a room, so if I stand in a slightly different position the sound changes dramatically, especially low end. But I've played about 20 CDs buy now on these, and found what some people call a sweet spot. I don't have any spare change for absorbent material , unless it's really cheap, also how would I go about it ( just glue it to the wall ). Is it better to buy monitor stands or position them to the wall. I'm going to read that article now.

Thanks, for the input.

Boris

Not really better to keep them near the wall, as long as you make appropriate changer to the settings at the rear, if needed.
If your room has a lot of glass - what about some thick curtains?
The cheapest option, instead of expensive curtains, is going to something like Home Depot and getting some removal blankets for just over $10 bucks.

Do the blankets have to be stuck to the windows or can there be some space between the two.

Space is good - the main thing is to listen first of all.

One good trick is to use a couple of boom stands, positioned as a T - and you just hang the blankets on the stands. That way you can experiment without doing anything permanent.

LSR25P Manual

Hey Rubo...
In your first post, you said you got the 'demos' and asked about the switch settings. Go to JBL's LSR25P web stuff and look at the top for .PDF files of the manual and the specsheet. That should shed some light as to what the switches are for. Mine are all in the default setting. SJOKO2 can certainly fill you in as to which switches you might need to flip if the manual is unclear.

Got my LRS25's last night...... Wow.... can't believe how clear the mix sounds on these. It was obvious right off the bat I'd have to redo everything.... at least I didn't have a lot done yet. So far I think they sound great. Not super loud... but I'm in a small room. The did crank enough. I could hear the bass response fairly well. I am gonna spend a lot more time with em today. Hopefully I'll post something done on em soon. Take care thanks Rubo
