Sounds like the take up reel motor on my MSR 16 is going. The bearing(s) sound shot when I FF or RW and during play, it somtimes just stops. The noise was getting louder and louder the past 2 weeks and Saturday I just had to shut down. Didn't call Tascam yet but just wanted to see if anyone here has a motor laying around they would sell. Ah.....the joys of analog! Thanks for looking!

I had to replace a motor on my 32, basically had to find a cheap "throwaway" machine on ebay... good luck !

Too bad we don't live closer...I can rebuild that motor.

Look in your manual...what is the part number of the reel motor?

Don't recall who but somebody here just got a 38 I think and got, like, 4 spare motors with it...

I think it was DarkShark who scored that deck with the spare motors.;)

Hi sweetbeats! P/N 5370008400, left and right motor are the same. They can be rebuilt? 38 motors are same as a MSR 16? Cool! Tascam has 13 in stock but the price, yikes! If I had a new bearing, I may try to press the old one out and replace it but........where are you located? Send me a PM. Thanks!

Sadly

I have a 32 that I'm going to part out. Not the same motor sadly....

Someone will have one.

Jerry,

Not the same motor as the 38...I wasn't sure and I checked and its not.

The bearings aren't are press-in type...they require an external puller as they are (if the same as the 38/48/58 style) friction fit on the shaft, not end the end-housings...I made a special puller to do this. The other thing that likely needs done is the commutator cleaned. If you pull the motor apart be sure to put the brushes back in the way they came out so the can seat back in the same wear pattern.

If all it needs is a bearing, an electrical motor repair shop can replace that for you, or try an auto electrical shop, they would have the gear to fix it too.

Just a thought

Alan.

Thanks gents!

Thanks for the replys gents! The P/N on the Ebay motor is different than mine in the manual but I'll call Tascam and check if they are the same. I'll try to yank the motor out this weekend and have a looksee. Sweetbeets, I'll be willing to pay ya for a rebuild if I can't score another motor, lemme know if your OK with this. Thanks again to all for your help!

Just a FYI, per Tascam, the MSR 16 and 38 reel motors are different, RATS!

Problem solved!

Pulled the motor out and found out the bottom of the reel table was rubbing on the motor, metal powder on the motor mounting flange and shiny, bare metal on the reel table. Checked the manual for reel table height adjustment but it just said somthing like "adjust as needed" so got a feeler gauge and set both tables for .007 height from the motor , also did a poor mans brake job. Put a reel of tape on and tweeked the tape rollers till the tape looked "happy" in FF, RW, and play. Works great, sound good! Didn't even have to take the machine out of the rack. I'm back in the saddle, just in time for the weekend:D Thanks again to all for you help!
