we just did this last night.

It's my first time with this gear.

He and the girl really wanted to do it live together, and then my parts and other parts later.

he wanted acoustic guitar mic'd and direct (through a baggs para di, so it was pretty decent)

his voice was a 57, but with the right touch, it worked.
her voice/my voice - mxl990
harmonium - 990/sm57
electric - 990/57
everything else was 2 991's - clapping, misc percussion

we are a pretty different band.

Everything goes to an onyx400f and mix in acid.

we still may fill out bottom end with a piano, but it sounds awesome right now.

sounds decent ........ awesome isn't the word I'd use.
There's a pretty constant distorted quality to the sound (could be during the transfer to MP3)
Guitar is hidden too much ...... I think it stands up well with just the instruments you have ....... I don't hear a real need for anything else but that distortion is pretty distracting and I'd do some more mixing for the levels.

My bad ..... I seem to have a corrupted MP3 player ...... I'm getting a weird distortion low end on everything I play so it's not on yours as you probably already knew.
Other comments still in effect.

electric?

yeah...it's going to be retracked as its out of tune.

and the other guy in the band liked how it was loud in the verse...i don't...i'm gonna change somethings

Nice tune. Seriously, it's a really cool tune.

I think the lead guitar is fine during the verse in terms of balance. I just think it needs to be placed somewhere deeper/farther with a bit of verb and less of a direct sound. It should be floating around in the back of the mix. And throw some compression on it - enough to quiet it down and then bump up the fader a little. The volume is inconsistent to the point that it's distracting. Listen to it from 1:40 to 1:58; at 1:40 it's almost too loud and at 1:55 there's a cool lick that's barely audible.

The keys sound good to me the way they are; I like the brightness that contrasts with the rest of the mix; I wouldn't change it.

Also, that symbol is a bit muddy and it's loud compared to the rhythm guitar especially at the beginning when the rhythm guitar is quiet and right before the choruses when the symbol comes in big and loud. I know it sounds cool that it comes in really big at those points in the song but it's a tad too loud IMO.

cello_pudding,
GREAT intro.
Personally I reckon the female vocal is too loud; she's at duet level. I actually think it would sound better with no female vocal but if she's there she should be more ethereal- not exactly Enya but not as solid as she is at present.
Really good song mate. Good arrangment & playing - I'm nervous about you adding the piano - two hands would REALLY crowd the mix - maybe just the occasional bass or middle notes to tie things together.
I didn't have any probs with the volume - the changes in that dynamic made sense to me. The piece reqires, demands even, some listening. Not everything sould come on a plate with chips.
Top job so far - I'm looking forward to the progress posts.

i'm playing with a guy and his wife.

i only play the electric, occasional vocal, and the glock. and i tracked/engineered.

yeah...the electric volume, he liked loud, and i think i should change it like you guys said. the cymbal was another thing we talked about to turn down.

i tracked it with 2 sdc's from far away in the room. we wanted it pretty back ground sounding. but yeah, its too loud.

we finished a song yesterday, and should be doing some more today. i think we're going to stick to just a lot of tracking. (hopefully, usually some parts he just starts changing...ugh)

and yeah. we don't want a whole two hand piano part. just a bass line.

i think a bass would be too mellow and conflict with the harmonium, so i have a piano down here that could do good things for the track.

I tried that once but there was to many limbs and holes to understand. :D

This is a cool tune i like the vibe you have going on in it. Kind of like an arrangement that Damien Rice would do. Its interesting and theres lots going on. You might find that when you start adding more and more stuff in that theres not much room in there.

I liked the song..but the mix sounds as tho theres some tweaking as it all sounds pretty close and the drum parts (Cymbal crashes) come in too loud in my ears...did you pan both vocals to both sides I would always leave the lead vocal down the middle and pan the backing vocal to both sides and lower the volume slightly...but again thats just from a personal point of view.

I really like this. The songwriting and arrangement are great. Nice production, cello! :)

By occasional bass note I meant bass keys on the piano. They'd give a nice colour to the bottom end. you're right about bass as in guitar.

Cool tune... I think the verse parts are too sparse and the chorus is too cluttered.... Low end would be nice to fill it all out, either bass or piano...piano would work cool I think you might be on to something with that...

the cymbols are too loud and distracting..

The female vox would be better if mixed in the background w/ a heavy doucing of reverb...

The tamborine would be better maybe if panned hard to one side and lowered....

tasteful lead line, good tone for the tune...when the verse comes back in maybe lower the level though.

That dam cymbol is too too loud! :) It's killin everything behind it.
