start with a 4/4 rhythm... now add a kick drum on the one beat, then add a quantized snare on every other beat for now, ....... there's a beat! 
You're gonna have to use your "courage" to take it from their. Don't forget the bassline, that's pretty important too.

don't forget to loop that beat at 4/4

It's really best to sit with somebody to see, hear and feel it happening. Know anybody in your hood? How about a studio. You can rent two hours and get a lifetime's worth of knowledge with the right engineer. I hate to suggest it, but check out the videos/dvds at www.samplekings.com to get an idea.
