Help with Tascam 22

So I received my 22-2 advertised as "excellent condition showing almost no signs of use". There was goo all over the heads, I assume sticky shed. Whatever - I clean it up. Heads don't look too bad, but they've been used.

Plug it in. None of the buttons stay in. Nothing turns. Press play, rr, ff, etc and you hear "click", but then the button comes back up after you take your finger off.

If the power is off, the buttons will stay in.

They said everything worked when it was packed up.

Any ideas?
 
Sorry if this is a stupid question. But did you try a tape in it?
When you lift the right tape guide does the capstan motor turn?
 
While powered up, try to lift the rightmost tension arm up. Is the capstan shaft spinning? If not, do you hear the capstan motor working? Now, while holding the rightmost tension arm [up], press play. Does the pinch roller engage into the capstan shaft? If all passes OK then mount a tape, thread it and try to go through the functions. What works and what doesn't?

Best case scenario is that it works or even the belt need replacement and worst case scenario [despite the tape path having been cleaned] is that the recorder has internal damage from the handling during shipping [which happens often BTW].

SPIDERS??? I HATE SPIDERS!!! :eek:

First things first... put some fire on it!

After that if it won't run with a tape loaded and you can't hear any motor sound when lifting the right tension roller take the back off and check fuses. And for God's sake man watch out for any sneaky straggling spiders that survived the inferno... finish 'em off with a bug bomb overnight.

I lifted the tape arms but I did not load a tape. That may be the issue, but I got really wigged by the spiders. There were a bunch. I don't think I want to bring it in the house. It's in the garage at the moment sealed in a bag.

In all seriousness, how can I bug bomb the thing without damaging it? I did take the front off and spray a little spider poison away from the electronics.

This friggin' blows. No more shipping - I found a guy locally who services machines and sells them when he has them. I'm going to get to know him and get up and running right.

I'll try again in the daylight out in the driveway. I hate spiders.

Good man. I always recommend against buying sight unseen and shipping, cause if the condition of the unit doesn't get you then a shipping disaster will. Always look locally.

If I were you, I'd file a case against this seller for sending you a severely misrepresented item. All the more better if you paid via PayPal. Just take a few photos, save the original auction page and also get someone (a third party) to vouch for the unit being not as advertised. Document it all as you may need to present it to paypal to get your money refunded.

Good question... that's something I've never had to do. I put a bug fogger in an old K-5 Chevy Blazer once because I saw a wolf spider run under the back seat and I couldn't catch it. It was either that or risk seeing the spider again when I was driving.

Ya see, I get this crazy look in my eyes (well, crazier that is... so says my wife) and I pounce on the spider like a cat. During this time I'm not aware of my surroundings so the only thing that would keep the Blazer on the road is cruise control and a level, straight road... given the front end was properly aligned and tires balanced.

In the case of a spiderized reel-to-reel I would take the back off, put it on a table and fog the whole garage (Make sure the table you put the machine on is in the garage).

You can get bug bombs/foggers at the grocery store or farm supply store.

I think you're best off returning if you can, and because the seller's listing was deceptive, he ought to pay for the return shipping.

Alright. I had time this morning to mess around so I took off the back cover. Only two spiders I could see, one was dead. Maybe they're all in my garage now...

Anyway I wiped out the webs I could see and gently used a vacuum and a little compressed air to get in the tight spots I could not see. I felt satisfied that it was cleaned out. Trying to identify the spiders, it did not appear that any were venomous. One kind of looked like a brown widow, but I don't think it was. He's dead now anyway.

The buttons do stay in - my bad. However, the belt or motors are not right. It slows down when in "play", and FF works but Reverse is painfully slow. I'm going to take it to a local tech and see what it needs.
 
My 22 was like that when I first got it. It might need a new capstan belt.

What kind of tape are you using? Is it new or used when you got it?
 
Yea like Beck asked what kind of tape are you using and how old is it?
I wouldnt go running to a tech just yet till a few more things are tried like fresh new tape. And maybe a new capstan belt.
 
The tape is a new roll of Ampex 407, the newer package that should be safe from SS.

I'll take a look at the capstan belt. Thanks for the quick replies.
 
If its Ampex tape its not new and could be your problem with speed on rewind.
You need something new and not old/new tape. Old tape like Ampex 407 can be so sticky that it will slow a recorder down to a complete stop. (Been there and done that)
So I would leave the Ampex off till you could get some new tape on your machine. Unless you have a way to bake your tape in a food dehydrator for a couple of hours. That might give enough time with the tape to check and see if the machine is ok or not.

I have a new roll of 3M 996. Same thing. I'm pretty certain the belt is shot. I'm meeting with a tech on Thursday. I want to start off on the right foot - even if it's just the capstan belt. The guy seems real cool and said he won't charge me anything to diagnose issues. How cool is that?

I'll report back when he's checked it out. The Ebay seller was cool too. They offered to give me a credit towards other purchases (it's a used electronics store) even if I keep the machine. There does not seem to be any bad intent by the seller, so I'm going to do my best to make this work.
