Hello guys,

I have a small homestudio in my house (around 16m2 or 172ft2) which I use for recordings and rehearsal with my band.
We have an acoustic drumkit, two small amplifiers for bass and guitar and sometimes I use my pair of Yamaha HS50 monitors to output synth effects and voice, which I don't like to use so much because I have to put it louder all time if we wanna hear it clearly. When the drummer is playing medium to soft, we can hear everything just fine but when he goes harder, we can't hear anything else.
I'm planning to built a PA system with mixer or maybe think in another alternative to make my gig sound better.
I wanna know from you guys, what you would recommend for this purpose?
For example, 1 powered amplifier and 1 mixer would make it work fine?
Which other suggestions you guys could give me?
Thank you!

Luis

One - remember that recording and rehearsing are 2 different things. Are you recording your rehearsals, and if so, are you tyring to put everything on its own separate track?

Have you considered headphones for everyone?

Sounds like just rehearsal. So Yes, a small mixer, mics, and PA would be just fine. While I do recording, I have monitors set up for pure rehearsal playing, s during recording they are monitoring on headphones.

Hey man.
Yeah, I know that these are 2 different things. I'm just saying I use my studio to work on my project, recording stuff through the Audio Interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) and also rehearsing with my band.
For rehearsal, we didn't record the rehearsals yet, but I'm also thinking about this possibility.
So, my question is, if I buy 2 active-amplifiers plus a mixer, are we going to be able to rehearse well with my band?
And also, what's the best technique to record a rehearsal?
We play with guitar, bass, keyboards, acoustic drumkit and 3 voices.
I'm thinking about buying 2 active behringer amplifiers and a Yamaha MG82CX (mixer).

My equipment:

I got 2 Audio interfaces hooked up together, 4 condensed mics ( 2x sterling ST31 large and big diaphragm, ST51 and Shure Beta 87A) and 1 dynamic mic (Shure sm57).
2 Yamaha HS50M active monitors and also a bose headphone.

What else would I need to make the rehearsals work fine?
Thanks for the feedback.

Hey man, you think 1 active amplifier should work fine in a studio of that size? I'm thinking about a pair of Behringer active PA speakers and a Yamaha MG82CX (mixer). I don't like using my monitors for rehearsing in high volumes because I heard that this deteriorate the quality of the monitors.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

One active PA speaker will probably work for rehearsals, but you'll need 2 if you every play a gig.

For recording rehearsals, it's a whole different ball game. Either you have to mic up everything separately, or use a couple of room mics to pick up the 'pre-mixed' sound - this can be tricky, getting everything balanced and finding the correct place in the room, but can be done. Vocals fed into the PA mixer can then be sent to a separate input on your AI to record separately to mix it into the final mix better, if needed.

I'll just use the PA for rehearsing. I won't use it for anything but rehearsing in the studio.
Are you sure one active PA speaker should work fine? I heard that having two, you get a more stereo and balanced sound when you have guitars fx, synth and voice which are being output from the speakers.
I'm thinking about maybe using the speakers for bass, also.
Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, stereo PAs wil be a much better sound for sure. U can get away with the one, but two will get a much more natural sound and also might allow u to have lower levels as the spread will be superior.

Recording out of the mixers is going to be easy, if for just recording rehearsals, hook up a small digital recorded from mixer outs or use two channels of your interface.

The quality will not be great, but for rehearsals fine. One issue is the monitoring in terms of recording. You are going to have bleed form the monitors into your mics. But again for rehearsal tracking no prob.

I would do the digital recorder, zoom or something on the end of the mixer as turning on all my tracking gear sucks power and no need to put any usage time on my tracking gear for rehearsal.

Well, you keep changing what you are doing, its hard to make recommendations! Why do you want to now put the guitar and bass through the PA? (you said you were using small amps for both) Are you going to mic them or DI them? The more you put through the PA speakers, the better the speakers need to be in order to produce good sound. There's no real purpose in 'stereo' sound for rehearsals - do you mean stereo guitar FX and stereo synth FX?
