help with death metal mix

It sounds good but the mix feels really distant. Consider bringing the guitar to the front a bit more. have you considered recording during a full moon in the woods or in a uni-bomber style shack? I know thats a bit black metal but more ambiance wouldn't hurt either.

Here is a recording I did using the ignite nrr-1 amp model and impulse cabs, I think that this is kinda what sound you are going after.

Ooft, that is sexy sounding. ;D Now that is what this guy needs, definitely

That is what I figured, he seemed to be going for something similar.

Now that is a nice guitar tone. So you didn't use an amp for that at all just direct using the ignite nrr-1?

Oh yeah I have them as well.

Actually here is one with Poulin's LE456 and Ignite's TS999 I did (small clip). I ran SIR 2 with a cab impulse I made.

I don't really mess with the fake stuff much other than demo reasons. I have some nice amps that fit the bill and micing up the real thing (once you get decent at it) really does sound better in the final result.

This is also an impressive guitar tone.

Yeah, everything about that riff is fake lol, the drums are programmed ezdrummer, the bass was di, and the guitars were using all amp sims. Yeah, I just used the NRR-1 by ignite, with I believe I used a mesa os v30 impulse with it. I have heard other samples that sound even more realistic than that. It is my favorite, but you can get pretty decent results with all of them if you play with them long enough, you tend to get a feel for how they respond and react in a mix. I have been using amp sims for about 4 or 5 months trying to get a good tone going. It's really all about getting good levels, and experimentation.

What are your settings in the NRR-1 and what are you using to load your impulses? I have KeFIR which I use most the time, but LeCab seems to be a good one to use too. I've been using the Le456 as my amp sim over the NRR-1 at the mo, as I cannot seem to get a good sound of of the latter. >.<

My chain goes and settings were as follows, I run the ignite ts-999 with gain at about 9 oclock, volume left alone, and turn up the tone to about two oclock. Then place the nrr-1 in after, I run the lead tone gain at about 2 oclock, bass at around 2 oclock, mids at around 10 oclock, treble at about 10 oclock. Double track and pan left and right 75 percent, high pass at around 100 hz and low pass at around 10 khz. I use sonar's impulse loader, but you can use either kefir or lecab no problems. I put the hi/low pass filters post effects, so you can use an eq after lecab or kefir. Just play with impulses, perfect space in sonar allows me to scroll through my giant list of impulses to get the one I wanna use, which is pretty helpful. I believe that I used the Mesa os 4 cab impulse in the sperimental pack. If that helps, tone also depends on guitar, pickups and such, I used a sterling by music man jp100d for that sample, the strings needed changed so the tone was a bit tinny if you wanna call it that, but it won't if you have a good set of strings. Hope this helps ya, post us a sample of how things go for ya.

My guitar is an awful cheap thing. I'm more of a bassist and drummer, and I don't even own a kit. ;D Haha. But my limited guitar skills have gotten me to play around and find something a little like these. - Guitar Tests by Somegeezer
002 is the NRR-1 with a mid scooped sound, much like your example and 003 is the Le456 with a mid heavy sound. I'm still playing with 002, but it's shaping into something I like. Forget 001 entirely. It was an early 003 playthrough, then I managed to lose all my settings on it. =P Any tips are welcome.

PS: Forgive my terrible playing. =P

I think 002 sounds good, it will sound even better in a mix. 003 has alot of gain and treble in that tone. I would roll back the gain alot, remember gain is your enemy when recording guitars. Roll it off till you like how it sounds, then roll it off alittle more. That's why I like the NRR-1, it doesn't appear to be a high gain amp sim, more like a mid gain or something, you can eq it pretty similar to how you would a real amp at a show.

Thanks. I'll play around with it some more and post more links tomorrow or something. =] You like 002 the way it is? I think both would sound musch better with a higher quality guitar, but I have to make do with this thing for now. =P

Things are gonna sound much different in a mix man. It may not sound the way you think it will till you throw a bass, drums, and vocals on it, and it will take a much different life. Guitars normally don't sound the way you think they will, till you add the other necassary parts that make up a mix. The guitars are filled in by a bass and drums, even vocals can make a big difference in the sound of everything. There is a huge learning curve when it comes to mixing and knowing what will sound good and what won't, I have been recording my own stuff for around 3 years, and only been really getting serious about it for about a year. I still haven't scrapped the surface of mixing and mastering my music. There is so much to learn that it will drive you nuts sometimes, you will find yourself analyzing everything you hear soon, but I will tell you it is addictive and fun. The things you can do with alittle patience and a few toys makes it all worth it when you hear something you created and are proud of.

Aye, I just like to get a second ear at times. =] I've only been doing this myself since near the end of last year. Just getting into it seriously now. Had my computer for just over a year ready for it all. Built it especially for recording. =P Before this, I was always on the stage or the one being recorded by someone else. It's a big change to switch that place. The sound is so much easier to set when the only gear I had to play about with was my bass and my amp. =P

Same here, I got to the point were I was disturbed by how many shitty recordings I heard from local bands, and didn't wanna be one of them, so I started researching so my band wasn't one of the stereo mic recorded bands that were out here. It is amazing to me how many people think that sounds good lol. A live band practice recording sounds like garbage lol.

have not been on for awhile. recorded a new song plus alot of covers while i was gone here is the new original song i made...and btw i do use impulses but still dont totally have the sound im looking for but it works for now.

But somewhat there?... The sound is terrible. It would sound better just using some preset sound on your line 6.

Alittle harsh bro lol. Yeah, I could make some suggestions on what to do to help you man. Double track, don't copy and paste if you did, get all your tracks done before panning and mixing. As for the guitars, generally pan left and right anywhere from 60-100 percent. I generally pan around 85 left and right. Put the solo stuff in the center, with your bass track. After you got your panning done to your tracks, then you can start to mix down what you got. A mix is literally blending things together so that everything is evenly spread out and heard. Things are getting pretty muddy in that mix. As for the drums, leave them be, don't do anything to them. If anything maybe alittle compression. Don't go over board! The bass and guitars are where you will need to spend alittle more time, since you are using ezdrummer. You want to high/low pass the bass, the bass is a "bass" instrument after all, it don't need a ton of high frequencies, or sub bass(frequencies generally under 80 hz). The guitars are a mid-high mid frequency instrument, generally speaking. Also, one thing I don't do alot is add anything to my eq, unless we are talking vocals, but there are no vocals in your mix. Guitars, try taking out a little in the 800 hz range, with a Q around 3-4. High pass around 90 hz on the guitars. See if these suggestions don't help abit. Experiment until happy, then go away for an hour or so, come back and listen to it again, if you are still happy, you're on the right track.

thanks guys im workin on it :) i keep recording everyday trying to get better at it

also ive been messing with my sound and im still unhappy with others that ive tried out im not able to get the clarity of higher notes that im looking for . i noticed what your saying about double tracking everything instead of just copy and pasting it definatly has a much fuller sound im working on a new one now and ill try to do that...
