I have a Pioneer RT-909 reel to reel tape deck and I have several types of tapes some Maxell UD35 90 and TDK GX 35-180, and some BASF tapes. I'm trying to figure out the Bias and EQ settings for these type of tapes, is there a why to tell.

The Maxell and TDK tapes you mentioned should rough equivalents to each other so no re-biasing should be necessary to work with either of those.

As for new tape stock, I don't believe either of those companies is still manufacturing open reel tape so once that stock of yours is used up, you can safely switch over the Quantegy 456, 457, 406 & 407. The tapes ending in the number 7 are 1 mil thickness and will play and record 50% longer then the 1.5 mil thick 456 and 406 tapes.

As for actual bias, level and eq setting for your deck, please refer to your owners manual for instructions on the procedure.

Cheers! :)

The owners manual only has Maxell UD 35 and UD 50 it says to set the bias to #2 and EQ to #2 would the TDK and Ampex 456 have the same settings. Is there a way to tell which settings to use on other tapes.
