Help! Stable DAW now freezing

Mikesong,

you will not be able to diagnose unless you have a replacement display card and memory module.

Once you get them (you can take off a friend's PC - but note the memory type should be same as the one you got) replace them with the ones you got and check if it still freezes.

An impropered cooled CPU would generally give you Error Exceptions, suppose you haven't got any, this is either the display card or memory.

Ok, I've been using my computer for about a week now without a crash, so the problem's solved. This fix resulted from one of two things: I replaced the store-provided CPU with one I got myself, and I re-enabled ACPI so that my video card, Delta sound card, and USB Midi Interface all share IRQ 9. One of these 2 things did it...one would think (and often hears) that disabling ACPI is beneficial because it gives each device its own IRQ, but in my case it MAY have made things much less stable. Or just as possible is that the old CPU was causing the problems, you might agree if you read the rest of this thread especially the stuff concerning the store that had been working on my computer. The only other minor change I made was installing an AX-7 heatsink w/ Enermax manually adjustable fan...it has dramatically improved my cooling and noise and I would definitely recommend it for DAW use, but it probably wasn't what fixed my computer. I guess i could diagnose if it was the CPU or the ACPI by disabling ACPI and seeing if the crashes come back, but my computer's working so well now that I'm not about to try it. Thanks for everyone's input...

If you don't already have it installed,I would suggest getting a copy of Si Soft Sandra...:)

I checked out Sandra's website - looks like a useful program but apparently Asus has implemented some sort of lock - why I don't know - that prevents my board, an A7M266, from working with the program. Oh well, thanks for the tip though.

Never seen a board that Sandra wouldn't work with..I'll check around and see what I can find out..........:)
