Help, sequence out of tune after a loop

OK, for everyone who thought Bluesmeister was hallucinating or actually someone from 'the real' Star Trek (the truth is out there, you know :) ) : here's a sample of the problem he described (with of course a spacy sound).

How wonderful.

Another HS2002 user here - figured I'd chime in. I noticed this problem as well when looping on some MIDI drums I was sending to VSC DXi. It keeps speeding up and creeping up in tone until I eventually get a DropOut. :mad: I will definitely have to try having some audio in the background to see if that fixes it like Pedullist mentioned. That would be sweet, although if it would just work right in the first place, that would be the best. I'm getting more and more frustrated (and feeling forced into getting SONAR) as I run into and hear about all the problems existing in HomeStudio that are fixed in SONAR. :rolleyes:

I know how you feel Jeff! Hey, what kind of problems did you encounter?

What soundcard do you have?
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz ... if only I had joined this BBS before I got my computer!!! *sigh* Oh well, "better soundcard" - just one of the many items on my long and growing list of new/upgraded toys to get. :D

Anyway, in a follow-up to this problem, I think that it is latency-related, at least in my case. I tweaked some settings and have seen a really significant improvement in this. Before the tweaks, I couldn't loop on a basic 4-bar MIDI drum riff output to the VSC DXi more than maybe 3 times without getting the dreaded DROPOUT, and the speed-up and pitch-creep were noticeable from the first time it looped. Now, besides a brief hiccup every so often at the start of the loop, it seems to be working ok. I sometimes hear a little pitch-creep right at the start too, but it works itself out much more quickly now.

Here's what I did: (don't know if these settings changes will cause me problems somewhere else, but I'll deal with that when it comes up - probably need to strike a happy medium somewhere) In the Audio Options General tab under Mixing Latency, I used to have the Buffer Size set at 100msec (right in between Fast and Safe), which resulted in an effective latency 44kHz/stereo of 300msec. I set this all the way over to Fast (10msec buffer), which decreased my effective latency down to 30msec. Also, I had Buffers in Playback Queue set to 3, and I changed it to 4, just 'cuz I thought another one might help. (Get the impression that I'm winging it, here? You're right. :D ) Also, I went into the Advanced tab and unchecked the Apply Dithering checkbox, which the Help said "may provide a slight improvement in real-time effects performance". Anyway, I did all these things at once, so I'm not sure what the individual effects were, but hey... it's working, so I'm happy. :) I would guess that the Buffer Size is probably the most significant change.

Anyway, if you guys try some/all of these tweaks and it works for you too, I'd be curious to know.

Tweaks

Jeff,
I tried those tweaks that you posted - including increasing the number of buffers in play back to four.

And yes, they really work! I still experienced the odd glitch though, with a note here and there that would warble for no apparent reason, but the record-player effect has gone. :D

I also did a wave profile, I think it was Pedullist posted something about this.

--- Write to C:\CAKEWALK\AUD.INI ---
[EWX 24/96 Wave Analog (2 in, 2 out)]
WDM.0=110 110 82 82
WDM.1=220 220 165 165
WDM.2=441 441 330 330
WDM.3=480 480 360 360
WDM.4=960 960 720 720
WidePacking=2

--- Write to C:\CAKEWALK\AUD.INI ---
[EWX 24/96 WaveRec Mixer (1 in, 1 out)]
WDM.0=110 110 82 82
WDM.1=220 220 165 165
WDM.2=441 441 330 330
WDM.3=480 480 360 360
WDM.4=960 960 720 720
WidePacking=2

How does that compare with anyone else's?

And, er, what does it mean??? :)

You gotta compare the settings with the SONAR Waveprofiler, Bluesmeister! :)

So you'll have to find someone around here with SONAR and the same Terratec soundcard as you (comparing it with my settings wouldn't make sense). Or download the SONAR demo and check out for yourself whether there are any differences. Perhaps the new settings might help you too! It helped me, that's for sure!

Hey, as opposed to ACKUS, what do you think of:

ELUH! (Every Loser Uses HS2002) :D

I'll go with that... :D :D

Yes, that makes sense!

There is a small PDF file that I downloaded from Terratec for configuring the Terratec EWX24/96 for Sonar. Unfortunately it doesn't give the Wave Profiler settings. :(

Ouch! That hurts :) But with the good folks at CakeWalk bending over backwards to help us HS2002 users, it won't be too long before we can hold our heads up high like those ACKUS dudes :D
