Hello!

I'm thinking of buying a 1010LT quite soon, but how can I solve the Phantom power issue...? I would like the number of inputs found on the 1010LT but I will also like to be able to have phantom power... (My dream product would be a soundcard/interface with 4 mic/instr with preamps and phantom power - but this does not exist as fas as I know...or does it?)

So what is the smartest thing to do?

1. Shall I buy the 1010LT and for exemple an Audio Buddy just to get the phantom power?

2. Buy the 1010LT and a cheep mixer, like the Behringers (just to get phantom power)?

3. Not buy the 1010LT at all and instead go for something else? Any suggestions???

I choose not to use the preamps on ins 1&2 at all because they're not very good. You can set the jumpers on the PCI card so that they are just regular line level inputs.

If you wanted to use another preamp (be it standalone or those on a mixer) through those ins you'd have to do the same. Another solution is to just buy a seperate phantom power supply and still use the preamps in the 1010LT.

Or just use ins 1&2 for mics which don't require phantom power?

If you only need four ins then why not buy a delta 44 and seperate mic preamps?

Hello!

Hmm...

"If you only need four ins then why not buy a delta 44 and seperate mic preamps?"

Well I will not buy the Delta 44 cause I would like 4 ins (XLR) with preamps AND phantom power... in other words.. be able to connect 4 mics and to that additional guitars, bases or keyboards... so to speak, 4 mics with preamps and selectable phantompower or not on each in and then lets say 2 guitars and a bass guitar...

For example, is it possible to add lets say two Firewire 410? Or, is a Delta 1010LT and a mixer a better solution?

Sorry I thought you only needed 4 inputs in total.

Obviously there are several options and it comes down to balancing quality and your budget.

If the budget is low then a mixer could be a good choice combined with the 1010LT. If you're willing to spend a bit more then standalone mic preamps might be a better way to go quality wise. Another thing to consider is that not all mixers have DI inputs for instruments. Most standalone mic preamps do. It's not advisable to go from an instrument straight to a line level input, guitar pickups output a really weedy (and unbalanced) signal which needs to go through a DI to be useable.

I don't know if you can sync two Firewire 410's, I don't have any experience with those.

oki.. thanks... only 2 more things then...

I don't know my exact budget but I can say so much that it is at least to low for me to buy 2 computers, that's why I would like to use my computers for standard things (word processing and so on) as well as for recording...
I've therefore made 2 user profiles in Win XP Home. One called Music and one called Standard. The Standard profile is what it says... The Music profile loads more or less nothing except the bare minimum, everything is so to speak turned of, no internet, no printer installed, no nothing more or less...etc...

But then... If I decide to go for the Delta 1010LT, how do I connect my speakers and subwoffer? (I got a harman kardon speaker system that came with the computer that is quite good - for computer use...)

If I go for ANY EXTERNAL Firewire system, lets just to make things easy, the Firewire 410, will there be any hardware conflicts between an external soundcard/interface and my now existing internal Turtle Beach Santa Cruz? Will an external soundcard/interface mean zero latency as you would get with for example The Mackie Onyx Mixers with Firewire?

Delta 1010lt + Preamp

I use the Delta 1010lt, and went with an external preamp (the M-Audio DMP3 Preamp). I think using a separate, external preamp is the way to go. It's done well for me.

Regarding conflicts between an existing sound system and external soundcard, sorry, I'm not sure. Our systems sound similar -- my computer came with a santa cruz soundcard, plus surround sound system plus subwoofer. ...However, I never got this card and soundsystem to work..! It would've required the purchase of $50 worth of cables -- but that's probably specific to the system I have. I don't seem to be facing any latency issues, though.

You may want to bring your system in to a local computer stoer to have someone look at it, and help you with a configuration that will allow you to use your speaker system and new soundcard simultaneously...shouldn't be hard.
