You need to understand your tools, how they work, and how you can use them effectively to achieve your end-goals for the mix.
You can't expect to arrive at a polished professional-sounding result without any fundamental understanding of things like this.
There are hundreds of websites and articles out there on compression, EQ, etc. Google is your friend
