Hi all,

As im relatively new to P.A equipment, i hope you gurus out here can give this rookie some advise..

As a part time vocalist, i often have difficulties finding a good place to practice. So i've decided to set a small jam room in my house, mainly use for some practise sessions with my keyboardist, do some simple recording and probably some karaoke sessions. And i've always wanted to achieve those "pub-like" live sound in the comfort of my own room. Im currently sourcing for powered speakers for the room and found the Yamaha MSR100 speakers(SGD1100/pair).

So my question is, are these speakers of any good? Can any users pls give me some comments about the sound quality of these speakers? Or are there better alternatives? Due to the size of the room and the tight budget im working on, i really hope you guys can give me some good advise that best suit my needs.

Fyi, heres a list of my humble equipment;
1) Soundcraft E8 Mixer
2) TC Electronics M-One XL
3) Korg Trition Le 76keys
4) Sennheiser 1081, Shure Beta 87A and Neumann KMS105

Hope to hear from you guys.. Thx in advance.. :)

Cheers

the MSR100 would be a good choice for your purpose... in fact one speaker is more than sufficient for your case.

btw, are you sure your neighbors won't kill you? ;)

Leeking,

Thx for your reply... Are you using the MSR100? Hows the bass like? I want 2 speakers bcoz i want my sound in stereo.. :)

For what it's worth, my experience with powered speakers has been poor (regardless of brand). The issue is usually lack of control. With separates you have complete flexibility. With powered speakers you lose some of that, and have the issue that if the powered part stops, other use options can be hard.

I've had better luck with powered mixers, which can be separated easily if more/different power is needed later. My number one choice is always separates.

There is also the question of expected use mode. Almost every time I bought something with one single use in mind (like home rehearsal), I ended up later with other use needs I had not originally thought about.

Ed,

Thx for your reply also... Unless i can find decent amp + speakers(any recommendations??), if not, i think i will go for powered speakers..

Btw, does anyone out here have any experience with the new Yamaha PAS300? Any comments about the sound??
I know its an overkill for my application but if theres not much difference in price, might as well juz go for the more powerful one..
