Magic Bag Of Sounds
hey, my band has some shows coming up next weekend so we're gonna lay down drum tracks for our demo tomorrow. its kind of in a hurry and most of my mics are 5 hours away. what i've got to work with is this
audio technica dr-vx1 - we have 2 of these, they're pretty low budget dynamics, 60-12k range (cardiod)
cad kbm412 - large dynamic for the kick drum, 25-15k range (cardiod)
cad tsm411 - a little tom dynamic, 50-15k range (supercardiod)
shure sm48 - crummy dynamic, 55-14k (cardiod)
shure bg5.0 - a condensor, 70-16k (cardiod)
i'd like to get a decent stereo image but its not REALLY necessary. we're a posthardcore band so we rock the drums pretty hard, 3 toms and 3 cymbals and a hihat.
given that information, what would you do? i've thought of these scenarios
(1) mono
kbm412 - kick
sm48 - snare
bg5 - overhead
(2)
kbm412 - kick
bg5 - snare
tsm411 - floor tom
sm48 - front toms
drvx1 - dual overheads
(3)
kbm412- kick
drvx1 - (2) front toms
tsm411 - floor tom
sm48 - snare
bg 5 - cymbals
(4)
kbm412 - kick
sm48 - snare
bg5 - overhead
drvx1 - (2) front toms
tsm411 - floor tom
on those cheap ass audio technica dynamics, do you think they'd be decent overheads if i unscrewed the grill? or is getting a stereo overhead a lost cause?
