I need y'alls help.

THe tower is under the table about 4 feet from the speakers.

the fan produces this loud hum that is interfering greatly with my mixing ability.

How can I kill it?

I tried putting a winter jacket on the case, but its still loud.

I need your help

My friend just built a wooded box and lined the inside with studio foam. I've only seen it a couple of times and didn't really look at it to close, so I can't give you any details on what he did but it's something to think about. Maby someone here can help you with the materials and construction of it though.

Go to http://www.auralex.com/
Scroll down to where it asks "Have a Computer Noise Problem?" It's a box made by Isobox. Don't know how much but I'm sure it's not cheap. Order a brochure on it - maybe enough info in it to build one. Good Luck.

simple. get the computer farther away. I went and got extentions for my monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The soundcard can be the tricky thing, luckily my Delta has a long host cable. Does it have to be under the desk? Simply moving it is way cheaper than getting a box to isolate the noise. The Isobox is over $500 I think. Quieter fans in the towere would be more economical that that!
Plus you'll get exercise having to get up to put in a disk or, god forbid, have to hit the reset button.

2 options.
1) 12-bore shotgun. Guaranteed to solve the problem.
2) Don't pay your utilities bill. Very strange, but eventually this is a pretty permanent solution
Oh year - the cost of the Isobox is downright stupid, easy to make something small yourself. Just a well dampened box, but make sure you still have circulation

Has a bunch of links for various self build and manufactures solutions.

I did the cheapest - 18mm MDF box, couple of hinges on the front, no additional fans. Air get's hot inside the box but my CPU/ RAM temps same as when not in the box but your mileage may vary particulary if u run Thunderbirds.

Building the box out of heavy materials makes more sense than putting expensive foam inside. My box cost about £12. I did mount it on rubber pads but seemed to make little diffrence to anything other than the box was sat on ruber pads :-)

Cheers

That makes sense. I would still allow for some kind of cooling.......

hi,

thanks y'all. I think I will like to go the homemade way. It sounds like a great idea.

peace

I hope y'all had a good weekend

I am curious-1) How do you ventilate the box without somewhat defeating its purpose? 2) if you don't ventilate, has anyone overheated there computer? or how do you not overheat your computer?

I am planning on building a box with no ventilation, approx 2 times the cubic feet of my computer( to allow breathing room).

I've burned a Mac by getting pissed off with the harddrive noise and covering the thing with a cardboard box stuffed with glasswool. The processor burned, expensive joke. Apparently the fans are not there for nothing :(

Apparently some PC's have large heatsinks and are capable of withstanding pretty high temperatures, others are not.

One solution is to build a box, solid sides, top and bottom. Front top 2/3 solid, rear bottom 2/3 solid.
The open spaces, front and rear, make some slats, 2" wide ply, spaced 1/2" apart. At 2" dept, do the same, overlapping the first ones. Fill the 2" gap in between with a thin layer of glasswool.
This will draw some air in from the front, and release hot air at the rear, using the fan of the computer. It works for sound control.
You can line th inside of your box with glasswool. if you don't want to use glasswool get a sheet of 1/2" soundboard for about 7 bucks and glue 2 layers of that on the inside of your box. Soundboard does not retain heat as much as glaswool does.

If you don't want to take any risks with your computer, just buy a "silent" fan from any computer component supplier, and build that inside the top rear of the box instead of the slats. Mount it from the inside, after you have installed the soundboard (so in fact you have a small tunnel, with the fan behind it). You can hook up the power from the fan from the same wires that power your computer's internal fan.

Now you also know why I have all my computer gear, hard drives etc in another room...........
