Although I'm not new to recording, I am new to puter recording. I have Cubase SX 2.0 and Emu 0404 soundcard. My first project was to record some projects from my DAT to the computer to continue working on them. I plugged the DAT in thru the analog, got a signal on both channels, pushed record and about 10 seconds later, the signal dropped out. It was still coming thru my monitors and Patchmix, but not into Cubase. So I tried again. This time it lost signal 25 seconds in. It's sporadic. Sometimes it even comes back after 10-15 seconds. So I picked up a bass, plugged it in thru my mixer.......same thing. It comes back when it feels like it. I must have someting configured goofy is my only guess. The Performance meter shows minimal load, if any, when this happens. Some concise input would really be appreciated from you folks who know what your doin'. Maybe a step by step configuration specifically for Cubase SX and the 0404.

Windows XP Pro SP1a
Cubase SX 2.0
Emu 0404 Sound Card
Pentium 4 Celeron 2.8Ghz
512 RAM

Just a stab in the dark but it is possible that your "drop in" and "drop out" buttons are activated. not sure where they are in sx but in the old cubase they are on either side of the cycle button.

Not that simple. We've elimated the obvious. It also does the same thing in WaveLab (another Steinberg product) . According to my studio buds, they've never heard of such a problem. It drops when it wants..comes back, if it comes back, when it feels like it. No consistency on when. It's a friggin' mystery and I need Sherlock Holmes!

Keep the suggestions comin'!

Hmmm
Sounds like some sort of software conflict, but I am just guessing.
Try disabling as many processes as you can, one by one. You might catch out the one that is causing it, again just a stab in the dark
