Help a poor aussie find an acoustic guitar mic...

Well it all sounds pretty good this morning - now I have to go back and re-record all the stuff I've done, as well as get all the new stuff down - looks like a busy time ahead!

It's funny, the amped sound (as you can see from the settings) is mainly high end - and it's that that's putting the "sparkle" back into it - plenty of bass from mic 1 - all sounds nicely balanced - here I was all this time thinking I had a "mid" problem when it turned out to be that the highs were missing - always had this feeling that recording in a plasterboard and carpet room wasn't conducive to the high end. Shows you how much I know - been grappling with this for a year.

Also, it was the fact that people keep coming onto this board and saying MXL603s are good mics, despite all the problems I'd experienced, that kept me trying various things, so thanks for that.

Very hard to go to work this morning....

Aus - glad to hear you're still enjoying the CD - if/when I get #3 up and running I'll ship you up a copy of that.

Flatpicker - if I was gigging, I'd be flogging them, trust me, but my "why play only one guitar when you can record 7" style of music, which Ausrock has now heard, doesn't really lend itself to solo performance. Maybe this will be the year I get a band back together... cheers! :)

Heck, if it didn't cost so much to ship it to the states, I'd buy one just on Aus's recomendation.

For the record, I think you'd get plenty of that high-end sparkle from a Peavey PVM 480. I tried one out the other day and it's brighter than the MXL or the Oktava.

Come to think of it, have you tried a Rode NT3? I tried one once and couldn't even use it for flatpicking because it picked up every little 'pick-click' as well as the note - way too detailed in the upper end for me. Maybe one of these in some combination with the 603s would be perfect for you.

Flatpicker

They're actually for sale in the US already at www.guitar9.com - just look in the acoustic section for Armistice (I'll do anything for a sale! :p ) so cost next to nothing to ship I'd imagine - can't remember where the place is but it's definitely a US site - if you're interested.

Haven't tried an NT3 - might give the NT2 a whirl though, never played with that all that much directly on acoustic.

Halfway through working day, can't wait to get home to do some more playing. Think my NT5s might be advertised in the local rag real soon - now that I've got the MXLs firing, don't really need two sets and the MXLs are a tad brighter, as has been mentioned ad nauseum on this board before.

Cheers

Armi,

If you wish, I could possibly "host" you and one of your songs on my NoWhereRadio site for a little while. I set it up primarily for my son's band, so we could get some critiquing of the songs and the "performance". Unfortunately, I can't justify increasing my storage space there above the free 15Mbytes, however it would be relatively easy for me to convert a track off your CD to mp3 and upload it to NWR.

BTW, FP.......if you are interested, have a look here......http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=95676

Hi Aus

That'd be cool - what is nowhereradio anyway? I'll have to go and have a look.

Which track would you recommend?

Cheers

Armi,

NoWhereRadio is actually the brainchild and baby of one of the members here, TheRealWaldo. I am registered there as Ausrock and currently only have one track from Matt's (my son), band (in an old line-up), there. Depending on song lengths, I would probably have free space for a total of 3 songs, any more than that and I will have to start paying...........not that I would mind helping Waldo with some contribution, but I don't intend to be paying for an increase in the bands' mp3 site, they can do that themselves if they wish.

Which song?.........damned if I know, lmao, you give me a couple to choose from and I'll see if they correspond with what my instinct is telling me. I honestly like them all for different reasons. I keep hearing some "medieval" influences that whilst I can't put my finger on them, keep taking me back to dimly lit, flagstoned halls...................I'm definitely going to listen with only candles to keep me company................it may be an interesting journey.

Medieval? Hmmmm... hadn't thought of that one! No devices of torture at my place - I will admit that I have trouble describing my music to people sometimes, I normally just shove a CD in their hands and tell them to have a listen, but medieval...

I'm always telling people to listen to it in a darkened room, not because of the romance aspect but because I know people aren't used to listening to instrumental contemporary music, and struggle with stuff that doesn't have words, so this is my way of getting them to focus on it a little.

I was going out with a girl a couple of years ago who was quite fond of the first album and had it playing in the lounge at a dinner party she was giving - didn't mention to anyone what it was, she just liked it, which was fine by me - she and I and a few others were in the kitchen - this I guy she'd invited rushed in and said "This is great! Would you be able to burn me a copy???" Quite funny really, eventually I think he bought a copy - people know not to make "CD burning" jokes around me....

But, I digress....

I guess my faves are

"Girl On A Train" & "Sleepless", tracks 2 & 3, and then maybe "Circus", track 11 and "I Still Do", track 7 - maybe "Wild at Heart" track 4.

I had a bit of a look at Nowhere Radio at work yesterday (where I am now) but couldn't get it to work - probably because our work PC build doesn't allow such things, I suspect. I really must upgrade my home PC! Always better things to spend money on though...

Let me know what your thoughts are?

Cheers

I found a cheap mic that works well on acoustic guitar

Hi...I bought a behringer xm2000s mic for twenty US dollars from zzSounds.com.
I was really surprised at how good it sounds recorded to my computer. Here is a link where you can judge the sound quality for yourself. This was recorded using this Mic through an m-audio audio buddy pre amp into my lap tops soundcard and cakewalk's guitar tracks 2 software. No post production work was done to doctor up the sound.....I had a ceiling fan on and a/c running while I recording. Take care.

I gotta say I'm impressed.
I guess it won't work for every playing style, but for the price, this is pretty damn good.
What kind of guitar are you using? Mic position?

Oren

I am using a Martin SWOM on both tracks and the mic was about two feet in front of me straight ahead (sitting down on a chair) and about a foot or so above the soundhole and the mic was pointed down towards the soundhole.

Still out there Aus?

Put my track thoughts a few posts up - whaddya think?

Cheers

"Mornin' Armi,

You beat me to the punch............."Sleepless" was u/loaded yesterday arvo to NWR.........http://www.nowhereradio.com/armistice

I listed it as "easy listening" as I thought that would be the most appropriate category. If you wish, you can put the link up in the Mp3 forum here and ask for feedback, also I can do a similar thing over at RO but their Mp3 forum isn't that active.

Kewell Ausrock, I will do just that.

Thanks for doing that, I appreciate your assistance. Maybe this year I'll update my damn PC! Starting to feel like a luddite!

My girlfriend's going overseas for a couple of weeks from this weekend, so I'll be setting up my mics and trying to record at least the acoustic bits of all this new stuff I have in my head seeing I won't have any distractions! :D

Been practicing them all daily - really want to get album 3 fully recorded by end October giving me a month to mix, master and press before release in time for Chrissy.

Be interested to see how it goes over in the MP3 forum.

Cheers

Armistice.
