So, some two years ago I bought a pair of Sony MDR-7506 for voiceover monitoring purposes. I was rather pleased with them but a couple of days ago one channel stopped working.
I was shocked. I always thought that the problem of shorted wires was restricted to $20 headphones.

I thought I'd solder the cable but it turned out to be quite a challenge, as the little wires inside are fragile and perhaps susceptible to breaking again. So... I removed the original cable (it requires getting inside the headphone, but it's not difficult) and replaced it with a very short one with a socket instead of a plug. Now I can just use another cable to connect my phones to the interface and when it breaks, just replace it. I also plan to place the socket directly inside the headphone (or very close to the cable-hole) so the short cable has no chance of breaking as well.

I got the idea from a pair of Sennheisers I have seen somewhere. I wonder why aren't every headphones made like that? It would save so much annoyance and trouble... (and the manufacturers would sell less, oh that's why).

"Forced obsolescence" - it's cheaper to replace than to repair.

Some headphones (don't know which ones at the moment) do have user-replacable cables.

Always hated that about my Sennheisers. They have the coiled stretchy cable, but the coil starts just at the perfect height for you to catch it on the table if you stand up.

I figure when it breaks i'll fit a 3.5mm socket from a laptop or something inside the casing.
I'd rather the cable got pulled out than the headphones getting pulled off my head.

Good call! :)

Mine had a coiled cable too. It kept entangling itself around everything and into strange knots. It may look cooler than a straight cable but it's by no means more convenient...
