When we do serieus video work I'm using the calibrite color checkers while filming to set white balance and clipping. For our own work we mostly just balance it's tutorial material
Later in your editor you can create a profile very easily. Especially when shooting log this gives you an almost perfect workflow and you can pretty much mix cameras.
The issue is often the monitors indeed especially on set. They are hardly ever calibrated.
Always warm up for 30 minutes and run a calibration. And with the new HDR/P3/BT2030/HLG is getting seriously important to make sure you know what you're doing. When doing conversions a very small error can grow into something terrible.
I've been called on high priority cases where the studio was mastering a DVD release and didn't trust their system. They just switched to new screens and SDI and had their black levels and gamma curves messed up.
Everything i see a review of that DVD i think.... Could have been a disaster
It's fun to go really deep.
Most people don't get it till they see or hear the difference

I've been doing the calibrations since 1997 and especially in the beginning people were very suspicious but when they saw the differences the most heard remark was "it looks 3d and I see so much more detail". The funny thing is it took them a few days to essential see the fine nuances like when someone walks from the inside to outside the skintone acted naturally
