headphone advice

Looking to get new headphones for DJ-ing. I'm looking at the Sony MDR-V500DJ and Sony MDR-V700DJ. The reason I like these models is that they have folding and rotating earcups, and they have single coiled cords. The 700 is twice as much as the 500 and I've read that both models have problems w/one side/ear going dead. Have any of you used either of these? Do you recommend any other brand/model that is w/in a reasonable price range--i.e., under $150? Thanks!
 
It seems to me that all of Sony's headphone's wind up going dead (right-side headphone).

But since you only need one headphone for queing, that shouldn't be a problem.

Normally, for DJ'ing I keep a couple of pairs Sony MDR-7506.

For making music I use the V900's or the V700's.

I have also noticed that the silver (V700's) headphones then to break (literally). Mine haven't, but a couple of DJ friends have had their Sony's break (rotator).

I prefer to use the 7506's because they are loud enough, but not too loud (like the V700 & V900). And it seems as if the V700 & V900 are too big and cumbersome for the club scene (even though the silver V700 do look damn good. :D

I think they cost about $79 to $99.

Thanks, Spin! I guess I should've been a bit more specific in my original post. One ear is fine for cueing but, b/c I live in an apt complex, I sometimes have to monitor all sound through the headphones (e.g., during late night scratch practice). Do any headphones exist that will give me two ears worth of sound for a decent amount of time? How long did it take before your "ears" went out? This will be my fifth set of headphones; all previous ones broke or one of the ears went out. Given my need to use both ears on the headphones, any further advice from anyone? Thanks!
 
The any of the ones I have mentioned will do the trick, as long as you are very careful with them.

I have the V600's and I like them much more than my friend's V700's. They're $20 cheaper, just 1dB less efficient but have more sound isolation so they are effectively louder during a gig, sound slightly better, and after an hour or so the larger ear cups make them a lot more comfortable.

Yeah, maybe they don't have that hip silver thing going on, but then I don't want a big old SONY advertisement plastered across my head anyway.

My vote is for the Sony 7506. A friend had them and never had a problem with either earphone. Great sound too, and pretty comfortable.

But If you're practicing and listening all night, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD500 headphones that i could happily wear all day long. I imagine there other models would be as ncie. I hear the HD550 has nice sound. My 500s are a little muddy in the lows.

Do any DJs reading really mix with the headphone turned outward?

I always use the sony 7506`s but either way headphones will break,The question is how long they`ll last and how good are they.Well the Sony 7506 is undoubtably the best headphns I`ve used and I had a pair that lasted for over a year and I think that`s good,Good quality headphns for $100.00($85.00 on sale) that lasts for a year...what more can I ask for ,$70.00 headphns that sound like crap and break in a couple months?No thanks I`ll stick with my Sony`s .

Plus, I noticed, last night, that the 7506's speakers "sit" closer to your ear that all the other models.

Therefore (in terms of mixing at clubs and at da' crib), your hear the the queing song sooner.

Thanks for the advice, all! I ended up buying the MDR V500s. They're too small for my big head. :D I'm gonna look into the models mentioned here. Any additional suggestions on headphones that will actually fit my big ass head? (7 5/8 hat size)

What do you mean by this? Are you talking volume or time? Because even a 1cm proximity difference between headphone drivers would only cause a 0.03 millisecond change in arrival time. That's very little compared to the 5 millisecond or more delay you might have between the headphones and the PA.

Even volume wise I'm not sure it would make much difference. Headphones work in the true near field and the volume drop with distance in this regime doesn't work the same as for regular speakers at normal distances.

I heard the new sony ones are off the hinges. I have technics ones which are good, but i got a great deal on them, thats why i use them.

sennheiser hd25sp's

i use the sennheiser hd25sp's to dj with in clubs & on larger venues systems & they have never let me down I have stood on 'em dropped 'em & they are still going strong :)

they are damn light & comfortable
& a lot moer realiable then the sony's :)

my friend waited for ages to get his sonys & after a month of use the left side just died on him
last i heard from him he is saving up for sennheiser's

a rough calculation from my currency to us dolars- the sennheisers should cost about 100 dollars

Maybe it is just my quirky perception, but I did hear a difference in arrival times. :D:D:D:D

I just think for "club dj'ing" the 7506's are better that the other headphones Sony has to offer.

Good. If you could hear that, they'd have you strapped down in a government laboratory somewhere :D

I have heard of some DJ's having problems with arrival times when they play large venues. I think they use stage monitors in this case. There's a great (or maybe bad) example of this on the cover of LTJ Bukem's Progression Sessions disc. He has two big speakers on either side, aimed directly as his poor ears.

Seriously, I did hear a perceived difference :), but it wasn't a great difference or that big of a deal.
