I was wondering what the best way to de-magnatize tape heads is. I know cotton and iso will clean them as far as dust and dirt goes, but what about this de-magnitizing stuff that my manual is telling me about? Also, do you think dirty heads will cause the playback level to fall almost to the point of not hearing them at all?
Thanks, Death

Demagnetizing is important. Is this a cassette or a reel - reel? Anyway, doesn't matter, same method. You need to buy a good demagnetizer first, $60 or so - Tascam used to make one, maybe they still do. It will come with instructions as to how to use it. I think the heads would have to be awfully dirty for the levels to drop that much, maybe there is another problem.

What Emeric said.

Remember that it is important that you use the de-magnetizer correctly or you could seriously damage your equipment.
