looking for a more accurate way of monitoring.currently i'm arming a track on the alesis and monitoring the signal from the alesis o/p thru the soundcraft ghost tape ins to the studio outputs to a samson s-phone amp and the signal sounds like #@*&^ nothing like whats actually being recorded to the hard drive on the alesis, which sounds KILLER(This is just luck).how am i suppose to check mic placement, etc. if i can't monitor the actual sounds being recorded.how do you monitor?

Doesn't the Ghost have its own headphone jack for such purposes? Just monitor through that directly off the PFL.

i'm not tracking thru the ghost.i'm just monitoring and mixing with it.using all outboard pre's straight to the hd24.

Can you flip the tape return into the main signal path and then PFL? I'm pretty sure the Ghost lets you swap between the XLR/Line input and the Tape input.

However you go about it, I'd guess the factor imparting the biggest detriment on the sound is the Samson unit, so I'd try to get that out of the way first.

gonna have to try monitoring from the preamp up the chain and see exactly were the garbage starts happening i'll keep updating.

What I do that may help is I have an HD24, al inputs from mic's to to racks of assorted mic preamps, the outs(1/4"") of the hd24 go to in tape in of my console.I then monitor my mix and mic placements

I would definately use the main signal path of the Ghost, and not the tape returns if at all possible. Ghosts are not known for being quiet or clean consoles. If you are trying to capture that type of recording, the Ghost may not be helping you. They are known however for being slightly warm and smooth consoles. They work pretty well for certain things The signal path you ahve been using on the Ghost though is opne of the paths that likely got the cheaper parts and less attention. Switching to the mix path may really change things
