having trouble using effects with Tascam 688

I have read the manual (which i downloaded and can barely read) and still cant make sense of how to use effects. I want to be able to use an effect on all or most of the tracks, but be able to adjust how much each track is effected.

Any help/every suggestion is appreciated.

Also, when i get the effects working properly through the machine, how do I record the effected track onto the tape, or does this have to be done during mixdown?

If you want to use the same effect with different settings or use more types of effects than supported by the machine I suppose you'd have to put them on during recording. Source>effect>Tascam 688

Wondering if this machine has direct outs on each channel? In that case you can also take the direct out from say track 3, send it through the effect and back into the 688 on an empty track. Then you can also control dry/wet better.

But can't anyone with hands-on experience with these machines help out?
